ORU Runs Past Georgetown, 81-63
Cory Rogers
12/21/2004

Honolulu, Hawaii – Caleb Green scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Luke Spencer-Gardner poured in a season-high 25 points to help ORU run past Georgetown, 81-63, in the first round of the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic here Monday evening.

ORU, already off to the best start in school history, improved to 8-0 heading into Wednesday's semifinal game against host Hawaii (6-0) at 11:30 p.m. central. The Golden Eagles trailed just twice the entire game and that was in the first two minutes.

Spencer-Gardner, a 6-1 senior guard from Melbourne, Australia, gave ORU the lead for good at 7-5 when he buried a 3-pointer with 16:53 left in the first half. He finished the night 7-of-10 from the field, 4-of-4 from 3-point range and 7-o-9 from the free throw line. In addition, he contributed two assists and didn't have a turnover in 38 minutes of action, while holding the Hoyas' leading scorer, 6-8 Brandon Bowman, to just eight points on 3-of-9 shooting from the field.

While Spencer-Gardner's first trey of the night sparked ORU on a 12-2 run, it was Green that helped stake the Golden Eagles to a 42-32 halftime lead. The 6-7 sophomore forward from Tulsa scored 20 of his points and had six of his rebounds in the first stanza, making all seven of his field goal attempts and 6-of-8 from the free throw line during that span to help ORU shoot 60.9 pct. (14-of-23) from the field and .75.0 pct. (12-of-16) from the free throw line in the half.

Georgetown (4-3), which lost to No. 1-ranked Illinois 74-59 recently before rebounding for a 58-40 win over San Jose State on Dec. 11, managed to cut ORU's lead to as few as four points on three instances nearing the midway point of the second half, but could get no closer.

Ashanti Cook's 3-pointer with 13:15 to go brought Georgetown within 55-51. However, Spencer-Gardner ignited another run with a trey, this time an 11-0 spurt that was capped by another Spencer-Gardner trey that gave ORU a 66-51 lead with 10:15 to go.

ORU's lead never dropped below 12 points the rest of the way, as the Golden Eagles controlled the remaining minutes with solid shooting and posting a decisive advantage on the boards, winning the rebounding battle 37-25.

Besides Green and Spencer-Gardner's efforts, ORU also got double-figure scoring from sophomore guard Ken Tutt (11 points) and solid contributions off the bench from Mickey Michalec (8 points, 7 rebounds) and Larry Owens (two points, tied career-high with nine rebounds, and collected a career-high four steals).

The Hoyas, playing their first season under John Thompson III, were paced by freshman Roy Hibbert's 14 points and five rebounds off the bench. Cook and freshman Jeff Green added 13 points each.

"To beat a program like Georgetown – a Big East team and one of the most recognizable names in college basketball -- really does a lot for our program," said ORU coach Scott Sutton. "We knew they were going to make a run at us, but we had guys step up and make big shots."

A fan from Tulsa posted on the Oral Roberts message board that he's hoping UH lose. This coming from a fellow WAC member hoping another WAC member lose in OOC play. He even try to explain to them on how to beat us. LOL! How does he know how to beat us! Tulsa haven't been too successful against us!

I guess he's so frustrated with his own pathetic Tulsa team, he's probably wishing that all of the WAC members lose too, especially when they are leaving the WAC after this year.

"GO BOWS" and I hope every team beats Tulsa too! \:D/
