On paper, excluding the HC (sorry Sterling, I'm still not sold on you as the right man), this is a really solid coaching staff. I've heard rumors that the kids this off-season were severely lacking compared to prior years. Really comes down to the kids...can they buckle down and listen to the coaches, and vice versa, will these coaches be able to reach these players and get them to play Red Raider ball????

@gopunahou: My sense is that having championship-quality players is more important than having ACs with championship experience. I mean, if you've got big, talented players, it's hard NOT to get to the championship game, if not win it. It's like an automaker setting-out to build a musclecar: If the automaker has a kick-butt performance engine available, it's hard to build a slow car.

@rrforlifebaby: As you can see from my previous post, I agree that the quality of players is probably more important than the quality of coaches. I mean, most football HCs and ACs know enough about the nuts and bolts of football that, if they've got quality players, they know how to game-plan according to the players' talents. The rest comes down to the players executing the game-plan on the field. The better the players, presumably the better they'll execute the game-plan.

Well that makes Mililani A LOT more Dangerous lol still don’t who their QB is...But their Defense looks stacked. I heard rumors about Hoohuli transferring but couldn’t confirm it.

@teamhawaii: If we look back on this thread for the past month or two, it looks like Mililani got the lion's share of transfers. Add that to the fact that they had a good JV last year, and it looks like they will again be in the state Open title game against St Louis.

Big get for Mililani and big loss for the Crusaders. Right now is a tough time to fight for playing time amongst the linebackers at St Louis

@genks: It may have been a big loss for the Crusaders, but I think they're still #1.

St. Louis probably has the deepest core of LB’s I have ever seen.

Jordan Botelho (Probably go back to hybird DE this year)
Nick Herbig
Lawaia Brown
Darrell Masaniai
Mason Tufaga

Hoohuli definitely would of been in the mix, regardless.

Deeper than our 2013 team with Saitui Moeai, Ronley Lakalaka, Kalama Chung, Tumua Tuinei, and other greats?

They were good too.

But all 5 of the LB’s have D1 offers. I think only Lakalaka had an offer to D1

I can actually go back to say St. Louis LB core was DEEPER last year with

Kila Kamakawiwaole
Emmit Vaiese

Jordan Botelho
Nick Herbig
Lawaia Brown
Darrell Masaniai

Mason Tufuga
Wyndon Hoohuli

That LB unit is crazy. Iona Purcell (Freshman) will make a impact too in the upcoming years.

Yessir.

I’m excited to see Mason. He plays fast and aggressive, but he’s a bit light in the okole compared to guys like Kila and Noa. He’s already made some very impressive plays, hope for more this season.

I don’t want to assume that Hoohuli transferred because of the competition tho, could’ve been a million reasons. Either way, respect for his decision and best of luck to him.

Yes!! That's the way it is now days, competition is tough, especially at a place like St. Louis. I bet at all of the top programs around the country the competition is crazy. Either battle or move to another school/Team. That's the mentality now days, you even see it in college. The crazy thing is with all of the rumors that we all hear about St. louis and Punahou recruiting players, It seems that they're actually losing players LOL!! Seems that Mililani and Campbell are recruiting players. Just look at all of the transfers....that can't be a coincidence and i bet that they don't all live in Mililani or ewa lol. It's all good, i actually like that Mililani and campbell realize that in order to compete you need to have the players. Go out and get um!!

I remember reading an article on HPW about where the St Francis players will go. I think it was Bubba that said “I live in Kalihi, my neighbor is trying to get me to play with him at Mililani” lol harmless really, but pretty funny.

It is true tho, over the last few years St Louis has lost a bunch of good players. I just hope whatever the reason for them moving on from the Brotherhood, I hope they were able to find happiness.
