2018-2019 Boy's Basketball Thread
The season is upon us. Anyone want to throw out their early thoughts or predictions?
Re: 2018-2019 Boy's Basketball Thread
Punahou should contend, even without Zayne and Cole.

That's a surprise lol. I think the usual ILH players will be in the mix as always. My early curiosity is how Saint Francis fares now that they are FINALLY in the Division 1 level. That double digit loss to Damien makes me think they could struggle in the tough ILH.

@Naz: Damien also beat Kalaheo by double-digits. When you can beat Kalaheo by double-digits, you're looking good. Over the past two decades or more, Kalaheo has established itself as perennially one of the best teams in the OIA.Naz wrote: ↑Sat Nov 24, 2018 1:01 amThat's a surprise lol. I pegged Kalaheo as the best team in the OIA. They can still win the league even if they start slow.

Over the past 3 seasons, Kahuku has been the team out of the OIA East division. It'll be interesting how Kahuku does this season I have to believe they are only expecting returners from last season. I feel Moanalua who lost to Punahou in the semis last year will have the momentum going into this season for the East division over Kalaheo. Seems like Kalaheo is depending on their 5'7" guard (coach's son) to be the man. Not enough for what Moanalua has.

@gopunahou: Well, if the best team in the OIA got beaten by Damien by double-digits, being the best team in the OIA doesn't matter.

We play Damien tonight. Could give people a picture of how good both teams could be.

As of 8 pm, Damien is up on Punahou 31-24. As we have learned from Saint Francis the last 3 years, being in D2 doesn't mean you have D2 talent. I have the feeling Damien will take over where SF left off in D2 sandbagging. I give no clout to the D2 state tournament at all. I wish they would go back to the format where the D2 school with the best record (of the small schools with no D1 affiliate) had to play in the ILH D1 tourney to earn their spot.
Unfortunately, the media has shown a blatant disregard for the disparty in competition and only cares about points as evidenced by who received the Gatorade award last year.

Wow. I can't believe the defending D1 champs lost to the D2 runner-ups from just a season ago. Damien is gonna fricken be the #1 team in the state when the first rankings come out ahead of Punahou, Saint Francis, Kalaheo, everybody. "D2" is a sham. All these capable teams should be in one division.
Re: 2018-2019 Boy's Basketball Thread
I was just going to say something about this. Is it too early to entertain the possibility of Damien being the best team in the state? Kalaheo and we are formidable teams and should contend in D1. Hope this isn't a situation like Iolani football making quality D1 teams sweat between 2008-2010.Naz wrote: ↑Mon Nov 26, 2018 9:34 pm Wow. @gopunahou: Yes, quite a shock. Obviously, Damien has no business being in D2.Naz wrote: ↑Mon Nov 26, 2018 9:34 pm Wow. Looks like Damien is this year's Saint Francis. Still early in the season but gotta feel good about their big wins so far.

@Neighbor: You might even say that Damien is better than St Francis was last year. I mean, Damien beat Punahou. Not only is Punahou D1; they're defending D1 state champs. It's like David slaying Goliath. Even if a D1 school had beaten Punahou, that would be something.
