Slinger statistics (with comment)

Some updated QB statistics through Week 3 (Aug. 25).

Reece Foy: The ‘Iolani senior has completed 50 of his 69 pass attempts for 712 yards, 10 touchdowns and no picks. His passer rating is 206.97. The highest rating in recent years was 189.98 by Saint Louis' Marcus Mariota (2010).
QB

Reece Foy, IOL
50-69-0-712
10 TD passes
Passer rating: 206.97
The skinny: Almost impossible to top this three-game run by the scrambling slinger. Then again, he barely played against Hawaii Prep, so these stats would've been (probably) even bigger.

Jarin Morikawa, MIL
70-124-2-665
8 TD passes
Passer rating: 119.56
The skinny: I had to do a double check and a triple check on the passer rating, but it comes down to this — Jarin's rating is fairly low because he's averaging less than 5.4 yards per attempt. That's a low, low number, but in the grand scheme, all Mililani needs from him is to keep the turnovers low. A pass by him is basically better than a handoff to a running back, which is true for a growing number of teams. We're a long way from the old ground-and-pound Wishbone attack days of the OIA West.

Larry Tuileta, PUN
25-48-0-429
5 TD pases
Passer rating 161.53
The skinny: "Tui" has a passer rating that would be third in 2010, when Marcus Mariota was dominant at the position. Though his completion percentage isn't spectacular, the lack of turnovers and a whopping 8.95 yards per attempt average figure into that rating.

Makoa Camanse-Stevens, KS
33-66-0-438
5 TD passes
Passer rating 130.75
The skinny: He's cemented his status as the lead QB at Kamehameha, even though his rating isn't supremely high. Like Tuileta, the key for Kamehameha is keeping the turnover number down. He could peak in the second half of the season, much like T.C. Campbell did during the state-title run of 2009.

Cody Lui-Yuen, RAD
28-49-1-488
6 TD passes
Passer rating 177.13
The skinny: He's bigger than most of his linemen, and he's only a junior, but his accuracy and control are approaching elite level. The only issue for doubters is Radford's Division II schedule, but sooner or later, the big tests will arrive.

Kekoa Kaluhiokalani, WAIN
37-68-4-384
3 TD passes
Passer rating 104.76
The skinny: Hot and cold so far, had all four of his picks in one game. Waianae's ground attack has struggled so far, which means the weight of the offense is on the senior's shoulders.

Montana Liana, FAR
29-46-2-338
4 TD passes
Passer rating 144.77
The skinny: He has what is arguably the most potent rushing attack in the state, but his accuracy and poise have stood out as a sophomore. Smooth, almost Stabler-like with that southpaw delivery. He, too, will be tested at some point.

Kahoalii Karratti, KONA
34-69-1-627
9 TD passes
Passing rating 165.75
The skinny: His game against ‘Iolani opened a lot of eyes, but it's the low turnover number that stands out. A season ago, he threw seven picks in a state-tourney game on a sub-standard, muddy field at War Memorial Stadium (Maui). The junior has clearly matured since.

Justin Jenks, LEI
22-38-1-202
3 TD passes
Passer rating 143.23
The skinny: Like Camanse-Stevens, Jenks began the season splitting time in the pocket. His preparation helped the Mules start nonconference play almost without a hitch. They will miss Kenan Sadanaga, last year's all-state offensive player of the year, but Jenks will ease the blow.

Makana Lyman, KAIS
51-103-2-594
3 TD passes
Passer rating 103.69
The skinny: He's coming along nicely after staying off the football field for the past two seasons. The Cougars and first-year head coach Rich Miano have made a commitment to the passing game and Lyman is among the state's leaders in pass attempts.

Kahaku Iaea, KAIL
20-50-4-316
1 TD pass
Passer rating 83.69
The skinny: He missed the opener against Kealakehe, had some struggles against a tough Campbell defense, but had his best effort last week in a loss to Moanalua.

Justin Tago-Su‘e, CAM
33-77-3-266
2 TD passes
Passer rating 81.23
The skinny: Not the greatest numbers, but the Sabers are relying on defense and their ground game before the passing attack.

Isaiah Hernandez-Fonoti, AIEA
33-63-4-461
4 TD passes
Passer rating 122.10
The skinny: He became the latest quarterback to struggle against Campbell's defense in a 7-0 overtime loss over the weekend. He's got a big-time deep threat in Kamakana Apelu, but even Apelu got shut out by the Sabers.

Micah Kaneshiro, MOA
25-45-2-360
6 TD passes
Passer rating 157.87
The skinny: Had a huge game in the 46-13 win over Kailua, a nice bounce-back after a tough outing against Waianae. Only a junior.

Kaimi Paredes, WAIP
12-28-1-270
3 TD passes
Passer rating: 152.07
The skinny: His value to Waipahu's spread option (double slot) offense has more to do with decision-making than passer rating, but at 152+, it's good enough for now.

Some other quarterbacks, including Keelan Ewaliko (Baldwin), Viliami "Lasi" Livai (Kahuku) and Kawai Mook-Garcia (Saint Louis) have only played one game so far.
