Lewis would always have to come from behind in the 100, because there were several sprinters who've had better starts and better acceleration phases. He won races because he had a better maintenance phase and slowed down the least at the end of the race during the deceleration phase. It wasn't until Ben Johnson took steroids was he able to get enough of a lead on Lewis to be able to hold him off before the finish. The 40 only measures an athlete's reaction and acceleration and not their ability to maintain top speed which is necessary in the 2nd half of the 100.

Unfair to the athletes to do such a bad job of recording/reporting times
I doubt they're FAT (fully automated timing) either
