You're talking about different races. There was Kō'ie'ie Fishpond 5K, which was ran on January 30th, and the Run for the Whales 5k, which was ran this past weekend. Hirsch won the Fishpond 5k, Grossman the Whales 5k.

Grossman ran a 19:25 at States and had a 2010 PR of 19:13 on cross country courses, so the 19:13 she ran on a road course, even if it is .1 mi (160meters) longer, is slower than what she is capable of running during the peak of the track season. If Hirsch ran in the mid to low 18s to beat Grossman, it would be impressive.

I got a question for all you track&field junkies..... is it best to run the girls and boys separate from each other or together during practice?

At North Central, that family takes on a greater dimension since the coach, Jonathan Knight, is also Katie’s father. With his daughter far ahead of the rest of the squad’s girls, Knight last spring put Katie in with boys’ workouts as she sought to break 5:00 in the mile. “If you run with people slower than you,” said Knight, who coaches boys and girls track and boys cross-country, “you tend to run slower. Katie was pushed by the boys in up-tempo workouts.”

The plan worked. Katie ran the mile in 4:55.77.

Having your top girls run with the boys may help them, but weaken the rest of the girls team, since now your middle pack runners don't have team mates ahead that will push them. You may also end up developing girls who become a slave to another runners pace and are incapable of running in the lead, thus never running to their full potential. Also having girls beating your middle and back pack boys could either discourage or encourage them.

Sometimes having boys and girls together at track & field practice is too distracting.

An ideal team would have the middle runners working hard to improve enough to catch the top runners, and the top runners knowing they have to work hard to improve so that they don't get caught by the middle runners. That way everyone improves.

KIF Track Meet #1; Pierce Murphy ran a 8:52.41 in the 3000m race. That's .49 seconds faster then the Hawaii State Record set by Bryce Jenkins. Looks like he's off to a good start.

Totally agree with you on that one. Too early in the season to say what Hirsch can do especially that she's never really been trained as a runner. She only started last year to challenge the Maui Marathon. Would have loved to see her compete in cross country but she was recovering from a stress fracture. With some coaching, she might be someone to watch out for but we all know, it's still too early in the season.

WOO HOO!! Way to go Pierce!! What a way to kick off the track season.
