Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon is close to accepting an offer to become Arizona State's next head basketball coach after reportedly meeting with Arizona State athletics director Lisa Love at an undisclosed location on Thursday, sources familiar with the contract discussions have informed ASUDevils.com.

Associated Press

Dixon could make an announcement regarding the ASU job as soon as Friday
Dixon was at a high school state playoff basketball game in Altoona, Pa., on Wednesday night prior to meetings with Love and his recently hired lawyer, Dennis Coleman, who also represents former ASU basketball coach Rob Evans, throughout much of the following day.

It is unclear if these were the first face-to-face discussions between the two sides, but negotiations have been underway for several days, with Love reportedly increasing the original offer made to Dixon earlier in the week, on Thursday.

Exact terms of the contract proposed to Dixon are not precisely known, but a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review website article has indicated that salary would be in the neighborhood of $900,000 per year over a reported five-year span. Pittsburgh is said to be offering $800,000 annually according to the same report.

Dixon has four years left on his current deal with Pitt, said to be worth approximately $600,000. Details regarding a possible contract buyout are unclear.

Meanwhile, a report in Friday's edition of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette suggested that Dixon was set to release a statement later in the day regarding his situation at Pitt.

Arizona State targeted Dixon early on in the process, with preliminary talks taking place between the two parties via intermediaries even prior to the dismissal of Evans. After Dixon's squad was eliminated in the second round of the NCAA playoffs last weekend, talks heated up dramatically, and it now appears a decision could be imminent.

Dixon, who coached under UCLA coach Ben Howland for five seasons at Northern Arizona and four seasons at Pittsburgh before taking over the head position upon Howland's departure, has guided the Panthers to three straight NCAA post-season Tournament berths. He has the highest winning percentage of any coach in Big East history (.775) at 76-22 and 33-15 in league play.
