Arkansas faces Rice in throwback to Southwest Conference era

By CHIP SOUZA
Associated Press
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) Arkansas left the Southwest Conference three decades ago, but you wouldn't know it from looking at the start to this season's schedule.

The Razorbacks start the 2021 slate against three former SWC foes in the first four weeks, including Saturday's home opener against Rice. After hosting Texas next week, the Razorbacks will travel to Arlington, Texas, to take on Texas A&M in the SEC opener two weeks later.

Arkansas has not played Rice since beating the Owls 20-0 in 1991 - the Razorbacks' final season in the SWC.

Coach Sam Pittman said the renewal of games against long ago foes should spark a lot of interest among the Razorbacks' fan base who followed the program during its SWC heyday.

"I love it for them, that they're able to reminisce about the old days," he said. "I think it will be really fun bringing these teams back. I hope there will be some older folks that will remember that conference rivalry and that they can come back and enjoy it and have a heck of a day."

The Owls are just anxious to start the season after playing just five games in 2020 because of COVID-19 related cancellations. Fourth-year coach Mike Bloomgren said his team was looking forward to playing a team from the highly regarded SEC West.

"We are just excited for the season to start after what seems like a long offseason," said Bloomgren, whose team returns 19 starters from a squad that went 2-3 in 2020. "We're excited to play in an amazing environment, excited to play a team from the SEC West with a bunch of guys with SEC experience on the roster."

WHO'S STARTING?

Bloomgren had not named a starter at quarterback for Saturday's game and plans to play both Wiley Green and Luke McCaffrey. McCaffrey is a transfer from Nebraska by way of Louisville, where he spent about a week early in the summer after he left Nebraska.

"We're going to keep it under wraps for as long as we can," said Bloomgren. "The people at Arkansas are going to see two quarterbacks this weekend. They've earned the right to do it."

PLAYING AS A FAVORITE

In the shortened 2020 season, Arkansas played an SEC-only 10-game schedule. In each of those 10 games, the Razorbacks were an underdog, finishing the season 3-7 with several narrow losses. Arkansas was a 19-point favorite according to FanDuel Sportsbook heading into the opener, but Pittman said his team was not taking a different approach.

"We're just worried about how we play," he said. "We want to play physical and not make mistakes. Just play tough. We just need to keep it about Arkansas and just play our best. We approach every game that way, but it is different because we're expected to win this game."

BANGED-UP HOGS

Pittman said his team is continuing to battle through camp injuries, but expects to be at close to a full roster by game time.

"I still think we're a little beat-up right now," he said. "We haven't had any injuries that are season-ending injuries, but we're still a little beat up a little bit more than I'd like to be. We anticipate we'll get most all of them back for the game."

WHO'S THE OLD GUY?

Rice starting right tackle Jovaun Woolford will take the field as one of the oldest players in college football this season. Woolford is in his seventh year of college football because of the waiver during the pandemic season of 2020. Woolford graduated from high school in 2015. Besides a conventional redshirt season, he also earned a medical redshirt in 2018 and an extra season when the NCAA ruled last season would not count toward eligibility.

IT'S KJ'S TEAM NOW

Arkansas starting quarterback KJ Jefferson gave Arkansas fans a glimpse of his potential in the final game of the regular season last year. In his only start, against Missouri, Jefferson was 20 of 41 passing for 295 yards and three touchdowns. He was voted a captain by his teammates.

"I think any time you start a new quarterback, it's his team," said Pittman. "It's a different team than it was with Feleipe (Franks). KJ obviously has different assets. I think if we're looking for a guy that runs this type of offense, KJ and Malik (Hornsby) is what we're looking for."

Rice week for the Hogs. So here is a Razorback story.

"Thunder on 16th street"

November 9, 1946. The Razorbacks were playing RICE in Little Rock (at Quigley stadium, Little Rock High School) for the Southwest Conference Championship. The winner would go to the Cotton Bowl. Coach John Barnhill was bringing the Hogs to Little Rock to help grow the fan base. Little Rock had never had a game of that magnitude before. As many as 15,000 people packed into the 10,000 seat stadium. The Razorbacks had a tremendous defense. An opposing coach said "when they hit you, you bounced, and they liked to see you bounce".
Late in the 4th quarter, with the score tied 0-0 and Rice driving to try to win the game, grandad intercepted a pass and took it all the way back for the games only touchdown. The Hogs won 7-0, and would go on to play in the Cotton Bowl for the first time, where they shut out LSU. The newspaper said "The great John Hoffman lept high in the air and speared the football, and thundered towards the south endzone, towards 16th street... thundering...THUNDERING....."

The story goes that the only person that touched him was a crazed fan in the endzone. Well, that was a girl who jumped on him...who he ended up marrying...My Grandmother.

This spurred the push to build a true football stadium in Little Rock, and just a few years later War Memorial Stadium was built. Now, if you go to the stadium you will enter in through archways that my dad built laying brick.

Grandad led the southwest conference in rushing, and went on to be a two time pro bowler for the Chicago Bears and his final game was the 1956 NFL Title Game (Before they called it the Superbowl).

Perhaps though, he is best known for "Thunder on 16th Street"

Go Hogs! Beat Rice!

Arkansas 38, Rice 17 HOGS 1-0

Post by HawaiianHogster »

What an ugly start the Razorbacks had. Other than the TD drive the offence never clicked in the first half. Too many penalties, dropped passes, bad passes, missed assignments, etc... Even after all that the Defense kept the game close.

Special teams made too many mistakes. Had punt blocked. Punted short a couple times. Fumbled a kickoff return but got it back.

In the second half towards the end of the third qtr and into the fourth the offense started feeling it. K.J. Jefferson started hitting the receivers and they caught it more than dropped it. The run game picked up and our RB's had a good time at it. The offense scored 31 points in the second half to Rice's 0. The defense came up big with three interceptions.

A win is a win. Rice came to win. They did keep the ball for a long time but what good is that if you don't win. Apparently Rice got tired and the Razorbacks were rested in the fourth qtr and it showed.

All I can say is first game jitters. I watched several teams ranked higher that had the same problem. Some of those teams found their juice in the second half. Some did not.

Here is a 10 minute film of certain drives or plays collected. Enjoy.

Wahat Ive heard...

1. Jefferson is very talented... but very streaky. Have heard their are time when he is unstoppable in practice and times where he looks just like he got to campus.
Horsnby has a ways to go.

2. O line has struggled quite a bit in run and pass blocking. My biggest concern.

3. Burks missed 7 days of practice in a row. Have heard they also hold him out of a lot of one on one stuff. They also have rotated guys in to get them more practice. Supposedly its a struggle with him not with the first team.

4. Have heard the defense wins 60-70% in practice.

5. we have a talented receiver room.. but not a good one yet.. they trust 4-5 guys

What we saw...

1. KJ Jefferson... A tale of two halves... Suspect in the first half besides a few runs.. second half looked like a way different player.. he was 4 drops away from completing 76% of his passes. We will need 2nd half Jefferson if we wanna go bowling this year.

2. O line looked solid at times and bad at others.

3. Burks has to be better. Hoping the lack of consistency was just because of the last week and a half. Was a lot better in the second half. Was nice to see us still have some success without him having a big day.

4. Everyone who watched yesterday would believe that our defense probably kicks our offense okole

5. Some bad drops yesterday from our top 2 guys... If im not mistaken we only had 4 guys that got meaningful snaps.

Coaching....

Pittman... we lose that game 2 years ago. Kids believe and in and love him.

Odom.. his defense carried us.. they play hard and are fun to watch.. probably 3 guys away from an elite defense

Briles.. I wont bash to much, my only real dissapointment from yesterday was where are the downfield throws.. One of Jeffersons strengths. And maybe some more designed run plays for Jefferson, but I understand as we need him healthy.

Fountain.. I thought we looked way better for the most part.. but stillit seems everygame we have some big letdown.

You're exactly right in saying we lose that game 2 years ago.

Otis has an article that is extremely encouraging in the fact that Pittman realized what we were doing on offense wasn't working and made Briles adjust at the half. It's refreshing to have a coach that can A) realize the plan isn't working B) make meaningful adjustments!

Otis' article is pointing to the fact that Briles doesn't understand the skill set of the personnel he works with. You'd think by now he would have learned to tailor his calls to utilize our strengths. But no, he's still having to be reigned in.

I wonder how long Pitt will go before he pulls the rug out from Briles for his failure to get it.

Last year he repeatedly failed to use Franks properly. It is frustrating to see his mismanagement continue and it appears he is simply a stubborn play caller.

I believe the most important thing about yesterday is that we won! We met Vegas' point spread, which I thought was crazy how that works. We played about as bad as we could in 1st half & came out in 2nd half , improved as the game went, looked much better, and won.

That's about as perfect a game for a Coach to see and have film of to let players work on. Remember, we were without both LBs. I thought our 2's did a great job. I thought our RBs did a great job. Our OL, I have mixed feelings on. Early in the game I saw one of them get completely blown backwards and land on his arse and it disrupted the play. He was literally knocked on his back! I'm not sure who that was, but, it sure made me think this OL may not be where we want them yet. Of course, Rice had I believe everyone back on their DL from last year and they had a top20 rated DL it seems like. It won't compare to UGA or Bama DL, but it's a good DL we faced. I thought our secondary took some blows early, but came out strong in 2nd half.

Once we pinned our ears back and started truly putting the blitzkrieg on them, it helped our dbacks a lot. Especially Catalon and Busta. It'd be nice to get Ridgeway back for Texas game. He takes up 2 OL by himself. So hopefully he'll be back.

Our TEs we're non-existent yet again, other than Kern making a good catch and run. I just don't know if Henry will ever live up to his hype. But there is a lot of season left.

WRs- Burks to me looked slow early on. Looked like he was running thru quicksand. His timing was off. I kept saying perhaps he should be pulled for someone else that was more healthy. But, he worked thru it in second half.

KJ even tho it didn't look like he was fast at all when he took off on runs, it seemed he wasnt caught much.

Anyways, we won. We have lots to improve on. Lots to build on between now and Texas game. I wish we'd have had one of the other Non-con games before we got to Texas to work more of the kinks out, but we don't. I believe our team will be really fired up for Texas also. Hard not to play up to or down to the name on the jersey. We will play up. Totally believe that.

OP is great.

What I saw:

*Defense is solid, not spectacular. Good enough to win games against all but Alabama in SEC West.
*Catalon is a NFL player spending his last days here. Run support from him is top notch.
*Offense was pretty basic and conservative. Not surprising, coaches want to see the basics executed well. That obviously didn't happen in first half.
*O line is okay, not great. The measure of good coaching is whether you're getting the most out of their abilities. Honestly, I think we are getting their max. Recruiting is the answer long term.
*KJ has to believe in himself first, doesn't act like he knows he is responsible for the O yet. Must assert himself.
*Treylon Smith, hard runner, tends to try and bounce outside too much on zone plays.
*Rocket should get a lot of carries in future. Imagine his playing time will only be limited by the intangibles of knowing pass protections, etc.
*Kudos to the conditioning staff. Team was ready for the brutal heat/humidity.

Horns Down: Arkansas Vs. Texas Rivalry History

Post by HawaiianHogster »

Arkansas vs. Texas is one of the oldest rivalries in college football. But how deep does the divide run between these two historic programs? Hear from players, coaches, and Razorback legends on what it means when the Hogs and Longhorns do battle on the gridiron.

Texas Longhorns vs. Arkansas Razorbacks football series history
Cami Griffin
Wed, September 8, 2021, 6:34 AM·4 min read

Texas and Arkansas have a long and storied history dating back to 1894.

The Longhorns and Razorbacks were one of the best rivalry games in the Southwest Conference for numerous years. Darrell Royal and Frank Broyles were in charge of the two programs when the rivalry was at its peak. Three national championships were won in the 1960s between the two coaches.

Once Arkansas left for the SEC back in 1992, Texas has only appeared on their schedule five times. Overall, Texas leads the series 56-22 and have never gone on a longer losing streak than four games.

Although it’s a dated feud, Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman mentioned in 2020 that their fans lead him to believe that Texas is their biggest rival. That seems to stem more from the Razorbacks side than the Longhorns, but nonetheless is an interesting statement.

First-year Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian acknowledges the history and tradition between the two programs, but is hoping to treat it as if it is just another game.

“I appreciate the rivalry and love all that it entails but on the flip side of that, from our preparation standpoint, we just go right in. Quite frankly, every opponent is a faceless opponent,” Sarkisian said to the media on Monday.

On Sept. 11, when Texas travels to Fayetteville for the first time in 17 years, they’ll be facing an up and coming Arkansas team under the lights with a sold out crowd. It’s quite a daunting task, but will serve as a good measuring stick for both head coaches hoping to take their programs to the next level.

Texas last played Arkansas in 2014, where the Razorbacks won in convincing fashion. Although Texas leads the overall series, Arkansas has won three of the last five meetings. Let’s take a look at the most recent matchups between the two programs:

Jan. 1, 2000 - Arkansas 27, Texas 6

Location: Dallas, TX (Cotton Bowl Classic) This was an anticipated matchup between No. 14 Texas and No. 24 Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl after the Longhorns fell to No. 3 Nebraska in the Big 12 championship game. The game was a defensive struggle in the first half that resulted in a 3-3 score at halftime. Texas quarterback Major Applewhite injured his knee in the second half, and was replaced by freshman Chris Simms, but the result was the same as Texas' offense failed to get going all game. The Razorbacks eventually scored 17 unanswered points in the second half.

Sept. 13, 2003 - Arkansas 38, Texas 28

Location: Austin, TX Ouch. Arkansas defeated No. 6 Texas on their home turf and ended a 20-game home winning streak for the Longhorns. Arkansas quarterback Matt Jones kept the Razorbacks in control through the air and on the ground, finishing with 8 of 16 passing for 139 yards and a touchdown, while also adding on 103 yards and a touchdown on the ground. While his statistics don't jump out at you on paper, a few of his runs came at crucial moments in the game.

Sept. 11, 2004 - Texas 22, Arkansas 20

Location: Fayetteville, AR Texas running back Cedric Benson put the team on his back in this one. He rushed for 188 yards and accounted for two touchdowns as No. 7 Texas narrowly escaped Fayetteville with a win. Arkansas quarterback Matt Jones was intercepted twice (Cedric Griffin, Phillip Geiggar).

Sept. 27, 2008 - Texas 52, Arkansas 10

Location: Austin, TX This marked one of the biggest blowouts ever in the historic rivalry. Texas quarterback Colt McCoy was nearly perfect in this matchup, completing 17 of 19 passes and accounting for five total touchdowns. At the time, Texas was ranked as the No. 7 team in the country and certainly looked the part.

Dec. 29, 2014 - Arkansas 31, Texas 7

Location: Dallas, TX (Texas Bowl) Although both programs entered the Texas Bowl with identical 6-6 records, this one was dominated by the Razorbacks from start to finish. The only scoring drive for Texas came in the second quarter when quarterback Tyrone Swoopes scored on a nine-yard run. The Longhorns trailed 24-7 at halftime. Arkansas quarterback Brandon Allen threw for 160 yards and two scores and was named the Texas Bowl MVP.

Predictions Texas vs Underdogs Arkansas Razorbacks

Post by HawaiianHogster »

I meant to do this before the game to build up to it. So to show you what some "experts" predicted here are just a few. Most predictions were for Texas and more than 2 TD's. It would take me too long to find them all.
