5 reasons Georgia football beats Arkansas

Post by HawaiianHogster »

Happy Friday DawgNation! Only one more day until Georgia football kicks off versus Arkansas in Fayetteville.

Game time is set for 4 p.m., televised on the SEC Network.

Georgia coach coach Kirby Smart has yet to name a signal-caller, and it looks as if he will not announce anything until game time.

The Bulldogs will have to find a starter soon with games against good defenses like Auburn and Alabama just days away, but for Saturday, Georgia shouldn’t have problems scoring against a Razorback squad that won two games last season.

Here are five reasons Georgia will beat Arkansas.

Defense Travels
Georgia is returning 14 players who saw significant action in 2019, along with eight of the top tacklers from last year’s record-breaking unit.

The 2019 defense ranked No. 1 in scoring average, 12.6 points per game, and ranked third nationally averaging 275.7 yards allowed per game while allowing an average of only 2.6 yards per rush.

Roster Depth
While former Georgia offensive line coach Sam Pittman begins to shape the Arkansas program in his first season in Fayetteville as head coach, Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs are coming off two No. 1-ranked recruiting classes in the last three years (2018, 2020).

Line of Scrimmage control
Although Georgia lost four offensive line starters from last season, it returns senior Ben Cleveland, junior Jamaree Salyer and senior Trey Hill, an Outland Trophy contender – given to the best interior lineman in college football.

They will be facing an Arkansas defense that gave up 222 yards a game on the ground last season, with an average of 5.5 yards per rush.

On the other side of the ball, the Bulldogs are led by junior nose tackle Jordan Davis, senior tackle Malik Herring and freshman five-star tackle Jalen Carter, to name a few.

Pittman will have to work his magic on an inexperienced Arkansas offensive line to get it ready for Georgia’s power and, most importantly, depth up front.

Georgia running game
So, the Bulldogs will most likely have their way on the line of scrimmage, which means watch out for UGA redshirt freshman star running back Zamir White and junior running back James Cook.

Both guys are explosive and have been healthy in practice to this point, which means they should be ready for a big day Saturday.

George Pickens
I’m not saying we will have to use star receiver George Pickens to beat Arkansas, but if we need him, we know how dominant he can be.

He is coming off the second-most prolific season by a freshman UGA receiver (A.J. Green in 2008). Pickens caught 49 passes for 727 yards and 8 touchdowns.

Plus he added a career-high 175 yards on 12 catches with a score in the Sugar Bowl against Baylor.

So, if the Georgia ground game stalls, the Bulldogs are literally in great hands.

HOGS WIN!!!!! 7 - 5

Post by HawaiianHogster »

Cheeeeehooooo! Hogs won the first half 7 - 5. No TD for Georgia until 6 minutes left in 3rd qtr. After that it all fell apart for the Hogs. They gave it their best shot. The defense was on the field too long and got tired out by the second half. Not deep enough on both sides of the ball. The Hogs defense is the talk of the town not allowing a TD until 3rd qtr. They looked good the first half. Georgia did have plenty penalties that helped our defense.

This is Georgia we are talking about. One of the best defenses in the country. A team that has been successful for several years with 4 and 5 star recruits. A team that reloads not rebuilds. Arkansas with back to back 2 - 10 seasons. A new coaching staff and new philosophy plus a 19 game SEC losing streak. One of the worst defensive and offensive and special teams in the country. They gave Georgia everything they had. They just need experience and time to beat the better teams in the SEC. By the end of the season they should have that experience. Hopefully a win or two.

Our first game we were much improved from last year. Next game @Miss State who passed for over 600 yards and beat @LSU.

Recruiting will be huge for next year. They need players ready to play against the best teams/conference in the country right away.

5 Factors in Loss

FAYETTEVILLE — Georgia rallied with a strong second half to defeat Arkansas 37-10 on Saturday in Reynolds Razorback Stadium before 16,500 fans.

The No. 4-ranked Bulldogs trailed the Hogs 7-5 at halftime and then fell behind 10-5 early in the third quarter. Then they took control of the game scoring 32 consecutive points.

Here’s five factors in Arkansas losing to the Bulldogs.

Arkansas’ Offense Couldn’t Get Running Game Going

The Georgia defense may be the best in the nation. It completed dominated Arkansas’ attempt to run the football. Rakeem Boyd is one of the best running backs in the nation yet he only managed 21 yards on 11 attempts. Trelon Smith, playing his first game as a Razorback, actually led the team in rushing with six carries for 38 yards. In the game, Arkansas rushed 28 times for 77 yards. That made the team one dimensional. The offensive line didn’t open any big holes in the running game and Sam Pittman noticed.

Arkansas’ Turnovers, Blocked Punt

Arkansas had a pick-6 by Eric Stokes with 3:20 remaining in the third quarter and the Bulldogs only leading 20-10 at the time. That pushed it to 27-10. Just prior to that on Arkansas’ previous possession and Georgia leading 13-10 they blocked a George Caratan punt. Georgia scored four plays later to take a 20-10 lead. Following those two turnovers on Arkansas’ next possession they tried a flea flicker with Treylon Burks passing and it too was interceped. Georgia went on to score and take a commanding 34-10 lead.

Arkansas’ Defense Wore Down in Second Half

Arkansas’ defense held Georgia to five points in the first half. They were also stopping the Georgia running game. However Arkansas was playing without several defenders including defensive end Dorian Gerald, who suffered an injury to his foot in the first. Arkansas was already without such key depth players as defensive end Mataio Soli, cornerback Jarques McClellion, safety Myles Mason, cornerback Devin Bush and safety Micahh Smith in addition to others due to various reasons. Pittman talked about the difference in the defense in the second half.

Arkansas’ Special Teams Disappointed

Going into the game Arkansas’ special teams were considered one of the strengths of the team. It didn’t turn out that way.

Georgia is Simply Better Team

We can analyze the game and much more, but at the end of the day the better team won the game. Were the Bulldogs 27 points better than the Hogs? Probably not the turnovers and blocked punt plus the safety played a huge role in the game getting away from Arkansas. But Georgia’s defense dominated and didn’t allow Arkansas’ offense much room to operate.

Arkansas VS. Mississippi State Spread

Post by HawaiianHogster »

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaafb ... d=msedgdhp
Arkansas at No. 16 Mississippi State (-17.5)
We knew the Mike Leach experience would be fun in Starkville, but we had no idea that it would happen so fast. The Bulldogs have to handle that praise, but Arkansas will have trouble keeping up in the second half.

Pick: Mississippi State wins 45-23 and COVERS the spread.

OFFENSE AND DEFENSE READY FOR MISS STATE

Post by HawaiianHogster »

BRADY LATHAM, OFFENSIVE LINE NEEDS STRONG PERFORMANCE AGAINST MISSISSIPPI STATE ON SATURDAY NIGHT

FAYETTEVILLE — The University of Arkansas will leave for Starkville today prior to Saturday’s game against Mississippi State.

The Razorbacks will depend on the offensive line to help an offense get untracked against a Mississippi State defense that recorded seven sacks in a win over LSU in Baton Rouge this past Saturday. Redshirt freshman left guard Brady Latham talked about the Bulldogs’ defensive line.

“I was really excited,” Latham said. “The whole unit was really excited to play Georgia. It was awesome having them be my first game. It was a big challenge and we’ve got a lot we need to work on but we’ve been practicing really hard in practice this week and I was excited to be out there. It’s always exciting to be on the field and I’ve got great guys around me so that was really comforting out there on Saturday.

“And then with Mississippi State this week it’s another challenge and we are really excited. They are a great team. They played great last week. We’ve been really focusing today and yesterday about playing hard and being a physical team and I think up front the whole team has been doing a really good job so far.”

Sam Pittman said he expects to start the same five against Mississippi State that started the opener. That would include sophomore Ricky Stromberg at center, redshirt freshman Beaux Limmer right guard, redshirt sophomore Noah Gatlin right tackle and senior Myron Cunningham at left tackle joining Latham in the lineup.

MONTARIC BROWN FEELS HOGS WILL BE PREPARED FOR MISSISSIPPI STATE ON SATURDAY NIGHT
FAYETTEVILLE — Junior cornerback Montaric Brown had three tackles, an interception and pass breakup in a 37-10 loss to Georgia on Saturday.

Now Brown and his teammates must go to Mississippi State and take on another group of Bulldogs. Mississippi State defeated LSU 44-34 passing for 623 yards in the process. Brown feels the Hogs can step up and meet that challenge in Davis Wade Stadium.

“Watching film on Mississippi State, they like to throw the ball,” Brown said. “You know Air Raid offense, you know. They take big shots down the field. They’ve got a good running back in Kylin Hill with speed. He got good speed and good vision. We plan on stopping the run and stopping the pass.”

That is a lofty goal for Brown and his teammates considering they gave up 387 yards of offense to Georgia including 366 through the air. But Arkansas will be getting some defensive backs returning who missed the season opener. Devon Bush and Jarques McClellion will return this week while Joe Foucha, who was limited against Georgia, should be ready for much more action.

“It feels great,” Brown said. “Those guys are going to provide depth and rotate with the corners and help us a lot in the Mississippi State game.”

Facing a team that will throw it 60 or more times Brown knows the depth in the secondary will be a key.

“Oh yeah,” Brown said. “Vertical routes are going to have guys tired. You’ve got to rotate. We’ve got depth, so we can rotate guys in. But yeah, that plays a big role in it.”

Arkansas named surprise SEC team after competitive opening week

Post by HawaiianHogster »

https://247sports.com/Article/Arkansas- ... 152239962/

The SEC returned last week and provided a list of memorable surprises. After weeks of speculation, the SEC brought a sense of normalcy to the college football landscape along with high-octane competition.

There were upsets like the reigning CFP National Champions, the LSU Tigers, falling to the upstart Mississippi State Bulldogs. There were also close calls like Texas A&M barely escaping the Vanderbilt Commodores.

One of the biggest SEC surprises actually came in a loss. On Saturday, the national audience was introduced to an emerging SEC challenger in the Arkansas Razorbacks.

The Razorbacks lost to the Georgia Bulldogs 37-10 at home. However, the final score does not tell the entire story. The Razorbacks held a halftime lead over the No. 4 Bulldogs and were in control well into the third quarter.

Under new head coach Sam Pittman, the Razorbacks looked solid on both sides of the football. They put together a game plan that neutralized the Bulldogs rushing attack early and made life difficult for redshirt freshman quarterback D'Wan Mathis.

It forced Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart to make a quarterback change. Smart inserted junior Stetson Bennett and that sparked the Bulldogs comeback. Bennett engineered a couple of touchdown drives and got help from his special teams’ unit.

Despite the loss, the Razorbacks proved they are heading in the right direction under Pittman and his veteran staff. This offseason, Pittman hired Kendal Briles to run the offense and former Missouri head coach Barry Odom to be the team’s defensive coordinator.

The wealth of experience flashed against the Bulldogs. According to SEC Network analyst Jordan Rodgers, the Razorbacks were one of his biggest SEC surprises last week.

“I was surprised at how well they fought,” Rodgers said. “And with zero expectations, weren't sure if they were going to be a hot mess on offense or if they were going to be decent. I think they're going to be a decent football team. I think they're going to do more than everybody thought they would.”

The Razorbacks have struggled in recent years. Pittman is the team’s third head coach in the last four years. They have endured back-to-back campaigns finishing the SEC West cellar.

Since 2012, the Razorbacks are 13-52 in conference play. The team certainly has ways to go, but showed against the Bulldogs that talent is the roster.

“I was really proud of our defense. Very proud of our defense. Proud of them at halftime and the entire game,” Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman said in his postgame interview. “Coach [Barry Odom] had a great game plan and I thought our kids especially on the defensive side of the ball played well.”

Smart agrees. He credited the Razorbacks for their ability to make constant adjustments and compete to the final whistle. He believes that Pittman, who served as Georgia’s offensive line coach last season, will get the Razorbacks back into contention soon.

This defense has three current/former walk-ons + a couple former two-star recruits playing significant snaps. It's the same unit that was literally the worst (statistically) in school history last year. What Barry Odom has done is nothing short of incredible.
