Lots of coaches took notice. Helton, in his first year at WKU, was named the Conference USA Coach of the Year on Wednesday. Jack Harbaugh was the last WKU coach to receive conference coach of the year honors, 19 seasons ago in the Ohio Valley Conference. It's also the sixth time the program has been awarded with conference coach of the year, as Helton joins Harbaugh (2000), Jimmy Feix (1973, 1978, 1980) and Nick Denes (1963).

Under Helton the Hilltoppers finished the regular season 8-4. The five-win improvement was the third-best in the nation this year.
