New UNLV coach Marcus Arroyo’s contract among MW’s richest
author logoBy Mark Anderson

Arroyo, who spent the previous three seasons as Oregon’s offensive coordinator, agreed to a five-year deal worth $7.7 million. The deal begins at $1.5 million next year and rises to $1.6 million by the end of the term, as of now tying him with the third-richest football contract in the Mountain West.

Wyoming’s Craig Bohl makes $2.14 million, according to USA Today, and he is followed by Boise State’s Bryan Harsin at $1.75 million. New Colorado State coach Steve Addazio will make $1.5 million next year, according to the Fort Collins Coloradoan. Fresno State probably will exceed UNLV’s figure when it hires a new coach.

Arroyo’s contract smashes the UNLV record for a football deal, far more than the $700,000 Bobby Hauck made in 2014. Tony Sanchez, whom Arroyo is replacing, made $600,000 this season.

Arroyo reportedly made $825,000 this season at Oregon.

Having a rich contract doesn't mean jack squat!!!! Bohl is making over $ 2 million and yet...NO conference championships. Needless to say the fanbase is getting a bit restless about that!!!!!

Fresno State confirms hiring of Kalen DeBoer as head coach
By John TaylorDec 17, 2019, 4:04 PM EST

Fresno State’s next head coach will be a familiar one to the Bulldog faithful.

Tuesday afternoon, Fresno State confirmed that Kalen DeBoer has been hired as its next head football coach. DeBoer replaces Jeff Tedford, who stepped down earlier this month after three seasons with the Bulldogs amidst health concerns.

His replacement will officially be introduced at a five p.m. ET press conference this evening.

DeBoer spent two seasons (2017-18) as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Fresno State under Tedford. He left to take the coordinating job at Indiana, spending one season with the Hoosiers.

The South Dakota native has been a head coach once at the collegiate level, at alma mater Sioux Falls from 2005-09. In that span, the Cougars won three NAIA national championship s (2006, 2008, 2009).

At the FBS level, DeBoer has also served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Eastern Michigan.

No but that is a big increase from the $600K that Sanchez was making and that shows that UNLV is taking improving football seriously.

New Mexico, Danny Gonzales reunion made official

With that, Danny Gonzales and New Mexico have filled the last open FBS head job (for now).

Earlier Tuesday, reports began to surface that New Mexico was circling in on Gonzales. Late that night, the Mountain West school confirmed that the Arizona State defensive coordinator is its next head football coach.

Gonzales replaces Bob Davie, who parted ways with the program after nine seasons. Weber State head coach Jay Hill and Montana State’s Jeff Choate were considered serious candidates as well.

— New Mexico Lobos (@UNMLOBOS) December 18, 2019

Gonzales is an Albuquerque native who played safety and punter for the Lobos in the late nineties, then immediately joined the football staff. He remained there for the next 15 seasons, rising from graduate assistant (1999-02) to safeties coach/special teams coordinator (2006-08) under Rocky Long.

When Long was fired, Gonzales left the coaching profession for three seasons. He returned as part of Long’s San Diego State staff, first as safeties coach (2011-16) before being promoted to defensive coordinator for one seasons.

The 43-year-old Gonzales left SDSU for Arizona State after the 2017 season. He spent the past two years as Herm Edwards‘ defensive coordinator with the Sun Devils.

“I would like to thank Danny for all that he has done for this program in just these last two seasons,” Edwards said in a statement. “We had a vision in mind when we arrived in Tempe and he was pivotal in helping turn that vision toward fruition. He is obviously one of the great young defensive minds in the country and when you have that kind of talent on your staff, you have to accept other places will take notice. We want all of our assistant coaches to succeed, because that means that our program is succeeding. I will always put our coaches in a situation where they have the best opportunity achieve that level success for themselves and for their families.

“I know that Danny will represent us well in Albuquerque and embody everything that he excelled at here while he was a Sun Devil.”

Gonzales will be taking over a program that has won eight games the past three seasons after winning nine in 2016. Outside of four New Mexico Bowl appearance, the Lobos haven’t been to a postseason game since 2004.

New Mexico football can blame one thing for the perpetual sad state of the program—the attitude of the fans. New Mexico residents couldn’t care less if the Lobos and Aggies failed to win a game. SOCCER is a bigger deal to NM residents than gridiron football. Which is shocking, considering New Mexico borders Oklahoma and Texas.

This is all OT but since you bring up New Mexico, it's been a haven for retired actors/actresses/artists for a while. I don't know why. Its home to Ali MacGraw, Gene Hackman, Julia Roberts (still active), etc. It's not really a sports state.

New Mexico may not be a sports state, but when the BB team goes on an NCAA tournament drought, it is a big deal.

And speaking of states that border Mexico, is El Paso the only city in Texas that cares about soccer? I know soccer is a bigger deal there than football because of the horrificality of UTEP football. Any time we’d lose to UTEP, our fans would consider firing the FB coach.

SDSU will have a new look for sure.
San Diego State defensive coordinator Zach Arnett has joined the staff in the same capacity. Ironically, Rocky Long interviewed for the same job before retiring. “Zach is a very talented coach,” Dino Babers said. “He learned under a great defensive mind in Rocky Long at San Diego State and excelled when he got the opportunity to run the defense there. His qualities, both as a person and as a professional, are an excellent fit for our program.”

"San Diego State: For a few days we’ve been mentioning that Brady Hoke was planning significant change at SDSU. Now the San Diego Union Tribune is reporting tight ends coach Ron Caragher, safeties coach Richard Sanchez and assistant AD for football operations Jashon Sykes all will not continue with the staff. They add that offensive coordinator Jeff Horton will no longer coordinate the offense; but is currently slated to remain on staff coaching running backs."
