Five hours after walking away uninjured from a spectacular crash in practice for the 99th Running of the 500 Mile Race, Helio Castroneves returned to the 2.5-mile oval in his back-up car.

He had to, if possible.

“You can’t be scared when you go out there. I didn’t want to wait to run until tomorrow,” the three-time Indianapolis 500 winner said after the session that produced the fastest lap of the month of 230.121 mph by Andretti Autosport’s Carlos Munoz.

Letterman retiring from grind, not from passion

Soon after hearing that David Letterman announced May 20 as the final taping of the “Last Show,” Bob Rahal rang up his Verizon IndyCar Series team co-owner.

“I said it looks like you’ll have no problem making the (Indianapolis 500),” Rahal said. “He replied, ‘Yeah, do you need a lap counter?’ I don’t think there are many other things more important to Dave than the Indianapolis 500.”

Letterman, 68, who’s hosted a network late-night talk show for 33 years, is retiring from the daily grind but not from one of his longtime passions.

Verizon IndyCar Series driver James Hinchcliffe is improving and remains in stable condition following surgery May 18 at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for an injury to his pelvic area and upper left thigh suffered in a practice crash at Indianapolis Motor Speedway earlier in the day.

Hinchcliffe is undergoing further evaluations in the Intensive Care Unit and has been ruled out of Verizon IndyCar Series competition for the foreseeable future.

"Words can't describe how thankful I am to the Holmatro Safety Team," Hinchcliffe said. "Those guys, in addition to the doctors and staff at the hospital, are my heroes. I can't say enough how much I appreciate the outpouring of support from INDYCAR fans, my family and fellow drivers. We are all one big family and it feels like that today."

10 years ago: Indy's roars were for Patrick

One in a series this month

When the 99th Indianapolis 500 gets under way on May 24, Danica Patrick will be watching from her motorcoach in the infield at Charlotte Motor Speedway. She insists on being free of commitments during “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” wanting to see every driver, every move, every great moment.

Patrick now watches as a fan, but knows exactly what it’s like to be in the “500” as a competitor. Ten years ago, she was the story of the 89th Indianapolis 500.

As a 23-year-old rookie, Patrick qualified fourth and finished fourth in what was a whirlwind Month of May from the very start to the finish.

The Schmidt Peterson Motorsports driver suffered the injury in practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway that will keep him out of the 99th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race on May 24. His spirit is unbroken, though.
