Dixon wins at Long Beach for 36th career victory

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Through two races of the Verizon IndyCar Series season, Scott Dixon was off to his worst start since 2009.

It certainly was too early to be overly concerned, he said, following 15th- and 11th-place finishes. Maybe, but his results in eight previous starts in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach -- one top-five finish -- wouldn't necessarily pump up the three-time series champion's confidence entering the 80-lap race.

Qualifying third -- his best on the 1.968-mile, 11-turn seaside street circuit -- was a positive and overtaking Juan Pablo Montoya on Lap 2 showed that the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet had the pace. When Dixon beat Verizon P1 Award winner Helio Castroneves off pit lane on the first service stop on Lap 29 of 80 to take the lead, he wasn't to be denied in the race that had only one caution for four laps.

Homegrown victory: Newgarden wins first

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- NBCSN viewers couldn't tell that Josef Newgarden was nervous with three-time Verizon IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon, who with 36 wins is fifth on the all-time Indy car list, was within striking distance in the closing laps of the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama.

The steely 24-year-old Tennessee native "drove my race," maintaining his line in the No. 67 Hartman Oil CFH Racing Chevrolet and keeping his foot to the floor on the 2.3-mile, 17-turn Barber Motorsports Park road course to claim his first Verizon IndyCar Series victory in his 55th start.

Only in the post-race interviews was Newgarden unmasked.

Power is fifth different winner in as many races

After earning the Verizon P1 Award with a track-record qualifying lap for the Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis, Will Power was asked about the prospects of a Month of May sweep at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Power mulled it over for a few seconds and the broad smile that lasted more than a few seconds while he was holding the $10,000 pole winner check returned.

"You have four sessions during this month that you want to be P1 in," he said. "One is qualifying for the GP, winning the GP, qualifying for the '500' and winning the '500.' It's possible, obviously. That's got to be the goal this month. My focus nowadays is so much on the '500' more than it ever was now that I've won a championship. But you can imagine just winning the GP and the '500,' it would be unbelievable."

Glad you asked: Indy 500 aero package primer

The introduction of Chevrolet- and Honda-developed aerodynamic bodywork platforms for superspeedways and road/street and short ovals has added another exciting dimension to the Verizon IndyCar Series season and the competition between the manufacturers that supply the 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 engines.

Both manufacturers have developed visually distinctive, performance-enhancing aerodynamic packages for use by their respective teams.

"It's really interesting to see two manufacturers approach their development and their output choosing different approaches," Honda Performance Development COO and vice-president Steve Eriksen said. "I think in the same way we've gone about building or respective engines through ways and means that are part of our core beliefs, aero kits are much the same."
