Before David Letterman became a comedian and late-night talk show host, the Indianapolis native was a big fan of the drivers who competed in the Indy 500. But Letterman’s favorite driver was not one that ever competed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway or in an IndyCar.

“It’s not an IndyCar driver but he could have been great and that was Ayrton Senna,” Letterman said.
The motorsports world commemorates the death of the great three-time Formula One Racing champion, who was killed in a crash in the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola on May 1, 1994. He was just 34 years old.

Faultless Rosberg takes commanding victory in Barcelona

Nico Rosberg won the Formula 1 Gran Premio de Espana Pirelli 2015 in some style on Sunday, defeating Mercedes team mate Lewis Hamilton by 17.5s in Barcelona to reinvigorate his world championship campaign. After an excellent getaway from pole, Rosberg never looked back and led from start to finish.

For Ferrari, finishing 45s back from Rosberg was a major disappointment, particularly as they’d come to Spain with a raft of changes that they hoped would enable them to take the fight to Mercedes. Worse still for the Scuderia, Kimi Raikkonen could not displace fellow countryman Valtteri Bottas, who drove a sterling race to fourth. Williams team mate Felipe Massa meanwhile climbed from ninth on the grid to sixth behind the red car.

Refuelling, faster cars among F1 plans for more thrilling racing

FIA
May 15, 2015

Image
Refuelling was last seen in F1 racing in 2009

Refuelling is set to return to Formula One racing in 2017, governing body the FIA has announced. The proposal is among several agreed by the F1 Strategy Group, which also intends to make cars five to six seconds a lap faster by using wider tyres, reducing weight and evolving the current aerodynamic regulations.

The Strategy Group, which comprises FIA President Jean Todt, Formula One group CEO Bernie Ecclestone and six teams (McLaren, Mercedes, Ferrari, Force India, Red Bull and Williams), also wants to see higher revving and louder engines, and more visually aggressive cars.

For next season a proposal to allow teams to choose which two of Pirelli's four tyre compounds they run at each race has been agreed (currently Pirelli select two compounds which all teams must use).

Race strategy - how the teams can master Monaco

May 22, 2015

Image
"In Monaco the safety car is an ever-present threat"

The opening day in Monte Carlo may not have revealed too much following an afternoon downpour, but by analysing previous Monaco races - and the patterns that developed in FP1 - the teams will still have a pretty good idea of how Sunday’s Grand Prix could play out. We take a look at the likeliest strategies they will adopt to conquer the streets of the Principality...

Monaco is normally marked by a big asterisk on the calendar - an aberration where the layout and surface of the circuit combine with the importance of track position, and the constant threat of the safety car, to create a unique set of concerns for drivers and teams alike. Strategies therefore have to be incredibly flexible in order to adapt to events as they happen. Even so, we can map out the plans most teams will start with on Sunday - even if events paint a very different picture when the lights go green.
