Domingo Lifts UH to Overtime Victory

Recap Date: 10/24/04

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Freshman midfielder Jessica Domingo scored the golden goal in the second overtime period to give Hawaii a 1-0 road win over San Jose State Sunday night at Spartan Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 12-5-2 overall and all but assured themselves a spot in the upcoming WAC Tournament by finishing 5-3 in conference play.

Domingo picked the perfect moment to score her first career collegiate goal as her game-winner in the 103rd minute ended an all-out battle by the two squads. Robyn deHay initiated a UH attack on the right flank, but her cross floated to the far side of the field, where it was tracked down by Natasha Kai. Kai then dropped it the ball to Joelle Sugai whose cross found Domingo in the middle of the box. Domingo out-hustled a Spartan defender then sent a low shot that trickled past goalkeeper Adrienne Herbst for the match's lone goal.
The match started with UH moving from it traditional 3-4-3 formation to a 4-4-2 lineup. Freshman Lehua Wood earned her first career start with Seline Williams and Jessica Uecker swapping their midfielder and defender positions. The Rainbow Wahine ended the match with a 16-15 shot advantage and had seven corner kicks to the Spartan's three. Senior goalkeeper Erin Chow posted her fifth shutout of the year, while registering four saves.

It was UH's sixth overtime match this season, a new single-season record. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 4-0-2 in those matches and have not lost an overtime match since 2001, going 7-0-6 during the stretch. With the win Hawaii moved into second place in the standings with the rest of the WAC schedule coming up next weekend. The top six WAC teams will be vying for the tournament championship, Nov. 4-6, in Honolulu. San Jose State, meanwhile, dropped to 5-10-1 on the season and 2-3-1 in WAC play.

UH closes its regular season schedule with a non-conference match at San Francsico Tuesday, October 26. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. PDT.
