Looks like we are heading towards a BIG BANG in the boys 152(154)......very interesting....people were asking for it, looks like we'll get it.....Corbett vs Pascua......somebody is going to go home very sad in a couple weeks.

Also, some 160(162) just got a gift.

A great day of wrestling at Aiea for the west OIA championships. Not to take anything away from the east or the other islands, but the wild wild OIA west is definitely where the BIG boys play.

Three of the marguee match ups for the day were at 138 and 145 for the boys and the girls 97 pound 3rd place match between Ariel Goo of Mililani and Joryn Angelo of Kapolei.

First for the girls, It was a flurry from the get go with Goo getting Angelo on her back for a brief second and scoring a very quick fall. Now if this were freestyle, it would have been a fall, but in folk style there needs to be a 1 to 2 second pin. After a moment of celebrating the pin was called a mistake and the match resumed. It was back and forth the entire way, which got each team going nuts, it was great! The match ended Angelo getting caught and pinned in the 3rd. Awesome Match!

The next matchup was at 145 between Zach Diamond and Josh Gallarde. Gallarde was relentless on top and really punished Diamond for about 2 periods. Gallarde was able to take a commanding 5 - 0 lead after 1. Then in the 2nd Gallarde was tossed to his back and nearly pinned, fortunately the clock saved him. The score was 6 - 5 Gallarde going int the 3rd. Diamond was able to get a couple of takedowns and stalled out the last 10 seconds to take the victory.

The best matchup was between Cooper and Bailey. This match was tight all the way to the end. With Bailey needng to hold on for the win, Cooper gets a reversal and takedown for the win. The gym was pumped and we could have used a hype man on the mic flowing with the match. Just like Rucker park!

I didn't see the Carlson match, but from what I was told it was a really convincing win from Lono.

Asia Evans and Kalyssa Pundyke won easily. Peralta looked to have trouble with her matchup. Fuamatu appears to be in total defensive mode and played a counter and slowdown match. The referee seemed to have stopped every half to pin attempt Peralta tried calling it dangerous. It's tough to win against a good wrestler with no offense.

Can't wait till next week!

There were quite a few not wrestling. The already mentioned Pagurayans, Tynanes, Makoa Cooper, Totten. Looks like in the east Ruiz didn't wrestle and Arakawa went up to 182.

Can Leilehua remain on top with Kapolei and Campbell getting their studs back and with Moanalua joining the fray?

Kama I'm not sure what matches you were watching but i believe the girls' match you are referring to was Nanakuli vs Kapolei. Unless there was another fast pin called then reversed and a wild finish.

Diamond vs Galarde, Diamond scored first, Galarde escaped and had a take down making it 3-2 Galarde at the end of the first. Second period Galarde chose down and got his 1. Diamond threw Galarde to his back and got the 5 point move. Diamond let Galarde up with 5 seconds in the period. It looked like both wrestlers heard a whistle and stopped wresting. It was 7-5 Diamond at the end of the second. Diamond chose bottom and got his 1. Galarde got a take down and Diamond stalled out on bottom and Galarde let him up with about 30 seconds left, score was 9-7 Diamond. Galarde got 1 point at the buzzer when Diamond stalled out the period. Final score 9-8.

Not sure how you saw both Galarde/Diamond and Bailey/Cooper since they were both at the exact same time. Bailey/Cooper was definitely the more fan wild match. I couldn't see the action from where I was sitting or I probably would have paid more attention to that match, Cooper 7-5.

Another good match was Campbell Terukina vs. Waianae (Keliinoi?) Terukina won 5-2. Terukina's nose kept bleeding but he ended up with the win.

Santos win at 113 was unchallenged since Pagurayan (west), Morisota (east), and Cabanban (ILH) and Watase (ILH) weren't there. Salangdron (Kapolei) moved up to 160 and won, and so the migration begins since Corbett moved to 152. Hopefully Pascua doesn't run so the fans can get the match of the year with Corbett/Pascua.

I heard that Makoa Cooper was out for the season with a knee injury. Don't quote me i could be wrong.

120 winner Tavares Redford won over PC Freitas who finally made weight but Pagurayan was not there. He has beaten Tavares all year.

132 winner was Leilehua Morante who has lost to Totten all year. Totten didn't wrestle.

170 winner Naosusuga had a close match with Aiea Burgos 13-12.

Not sure what weight Tynanes wrestles but he was abscent.

Sullivan 220 teched his finals and continues to be untouchable. Muti 285 pinned his way to a championship. Heard we should see him in a UH Warrior helmet this fall as one of the UH football recruits.

Disappointing turn out with many contenders not wrestling. Almost making Westerns irrelevant since I don't see the contenders losing their seeding at OIA's. Does anyone know how that works.

OIA'S 2016 is gonna be LIT!!!
106: Stalcup Vs Garcia will be a battle. Garcia is dirty af but Stalcup never backs down. Stalcup pulls out the win in this one.
113: Santos, Pagurayan, Morisato, Nitta. Super deep weight class. too close to call but Santos looked good at West
120: Pagurayan, Morisato, Tavares, Diamond looking to make a name for himself. Pagurayan should be healthy.
126: Terukina, Keliinoi rematch from westerns final. will be a war.
132: ILaban-totten should handle Ruiz 1 more time.
138: Bailey vs Cooper will be a barn burner but I think Bailey takes this one.
145: Diamond Vs. Gallarde. Diamond looked great for his first tournament back since his officials injury. Out wrestled Gallarde at westerns but I see Gallarde coming back extra strong and taking it this time. had the match been 30 seconds longer Gallarde would have won.
152: Corbett Vs. Nick Kim as long as they aren't on the same side of the bracket would be the best finals match for Liam. Kim is only a sophomore but is as slick and he is strong. Very impressed with this young man however Corbett owns whatever weightclass he enters.
160: No clue who fills the void left by Corbett
170: Jake from state farm...i mean waianae. unless he feels its finally safe to go back down to 160. I swear he ran from corbett last year too didn't he?
all those roids must have shrank his balls. Grow a pair and stop running!!!!!!!

OIA Championships dis weekend..For the boys side if their players are healthy I gotta give a slight edge to Kapolei followed by Campbell and Leilehua....My sleeper team is Moanalua...Dey can make it interesting and it wouldn't surprise me dey win it all but i'll have to keep dem as a sleeper...On da girls side Pearl City edges Roosevelt followed by Waianae and my sleeper team is Moanalua...It looks like dey moved up all their JV girls who won da JV title so we see how da young ones do...shud be an exciting finish

This weekend is going to be fun. Should be some pretty close races. Girls should have a 3 way race for first. Boys should be in a close one as well, with 4 teams looking to make it close. Moanalua has a very solid lineup all around and should pick up a lot of points in the wrestle backs. Regardless, there are going to be a lot of battles and put the OIA significantly behind the ILH/Maui for qualifiers to state. The ILH/Maui big dogs should Q between 11-14 each, simply because of the number of participants in their tourneys. This should make the state results something like this: 1. Iolani 2. Campbell 3. KSK 4. Punahou 5. Baldwin 6. Kapolei.

All of this is based on the results of Officials and Divisional tournaments that can be found on hawaiiprepworld.com.
Girls:
1. Pearl City(5 Finalists: 109, 129, 140, 147, 170 w 4 more placers: 124, 134, 157, 186) 9 to qualify for state
2. Roosevelt(4 Finalists: 99, 104, 109, 114 w 5 more placers: 119, 124, 129, 157, 227) 9 to qualify for state
3. Waianae(4 Finalists: 124, 129, 134, 227 w 4 more placers: 99, 109, 114, 119) 8 to qualify for state
4. Kapolei(2 Finalists: 119, 140 w 7 more placers: 99, 104, 129, 157, 170, 186, 227) 9 to qualify for state
5. Campbell(3 Finalists: 114, 157, 170 w 3 more placers: 104, 147, 186) 6 to qualify for state

Boys:
1. Campbell(5 Finalists: 113, 128, 147, 197, 222 w 5 more placers: 108, 134, 140, 172, 287) 10 to qualify for state
2. Moanalua(2 Finalists: 108, 134 w 9 more placers: 115, 122, 128, 140, 147, 154, 172, 197, 222) 11 to qualify for state
3. Kapolei(6 Finalists: 113, 122, 134, 162, 222, 287 w 3 more placers: 128, 172, 197) 9 to qualify for state
4. Waianae(4 Finalists: 127, 138, 172, 184 w 5 more placers: 134, 147, 162, 222, 287) 9 to qualify for state
5. Leilehua(3 FInalists: 108, 154, 287 w 5 more placers: 115, 134, 147, 184, 197) 8 to qualify for state

Really extensive list. Pretty much on par. If Kapolei has 6 finalist, they'll probably finish first in the OIA. I wonder how Big Kevin Corbett feels about Leilehua being ranked 5th...

Hopefully he feels insulted and attempts to drive his "non-stud" wrestlers to greater things. The problem is going to be that a lot of the finalists might not finish top 4 come OIA's. That goes for every school.
