Thanks for the breakdown st, it looks like Wittek has the slight edge right now.

may.18 practice 8

full pads. offense in all white. defense in all green. qbs in red shirts. refs on hand. coaches clinic day. high school coaching staffs in attendance. #4 lakalaka and #5 pedroza out of pads.

punts: #90 novoa getting good distance, but, with an under 4 hang time, coverage will have to sprint to contain return or isolate the return route to one sideline.

sprint/stretch: team shows good spirits, ready to compete. backs with ball while doing sprint with coach moses with the joust stick checking their ball control.

squad drills:
field goals: #62 brodie nakama long snapper, #24 bukoski holding for #31 kaina mcdonald. #60 brian hittner long snapper, #11 woolsey holding for #90 novoa.
qbs/rbs: handoffs, hitting the center gap.
defense: running sideline to sideline, sidestep, shuffle, break.
defense: 1 x 1: blocking matches.
rbs: moses running them with joust stick, foot work over barriers, hitting the hole.
dbs: coach elimimian working their back stepping, break to side. sideline to sideline.
lbs: coach gouveia getting them to burst through line, penetrate into backfield, shed blocker. tackling drills while on ground.
qb/wr: wide outs crossing patterns; short routes. #14 kemp in pads and working out with unit.
d line: blocking basics; get through block, into backfield. #97 meffy kolomatangi 6’5” 220# looks good.

11s with refs:
#93 luke shawley 6’3” 240# on the left, #54 penitito faalologo 5’11” 250# on the nose, #90 kennedy tulimasealii 6’1” 280# on the right for a 770# heavy defense.
#96 david manoa 6’3” 210# on the left, #75 kory rasmussen 6’2” 270# at nose, #97 kolomatangi on the right for a 700# light defense.
a variety of personnel mixes were used for front three.
#49 manley williams 6’2” 180# linebacker, down with a left knee injury. finished for the day.

11s situationals with refs:
#13 wittek taking initial snaps. irate defensive back tosses offensive helmet thirty yards downfield, and takes the rest of the day off. (coach chow already warned team about unsportsmanlike conduct and egregious penalties that sap momentum from the team play) can't let them get to you.
#98 marquis fairchild 6’3” 230 on the left, #75 rasmussen on the nose, #97 koloamatangi on the right for a 720# medium defensive front.
#44 metuisela unga 6’5” 250# lining up as tight end, gets a crossing pattern completion and big hit. i like the hard eight.
#16 reilley completes to #81 haynes and a flag on the defense..
#13 wittek hits #24 jamal mayo 5’11” 175#, who is in green today, for an interception, mayo takes it in for a touchdown.
#3 simon poti 6’0” 220# and #17 lance williams 6’0” 220# blitz, penetrate and gets a tackle for loss in the backfield.
#11 woolsey gets two completions to #49 andrew ho 6’2” 210#. and a third long completion to #49 ho who runs it in for a td.
#14 kemp makes a clutch catch on the sidelines. and sustains a left leg injury. he was able to walk it off after a brief rest.
completion to #80 ammon barker 6’4” 200# on the makai sidelines, who then takes off for a touchdown.

players are more competitive as chow has placed all jobs up for grabs pending spring training evaluations.
offense and defense is running better as last year’s returners are comfortable and knowledgeable of playbook and are executing plays.
players are a bit larger, faster on both sides of the ball.
good to have 6’ plus on the qbs.

o-line: getting off defense blocks. blocking positions of hands.

with a healthy receiving corps, accurate passing, bigger better o line protection, could this be the year for one or two1000 yard receivers? much too early, but, still, they looked good today. if lakalaka does return punts, that’s a lot of heavy coming downhill with cutting ability. pace is quick for plays, no huddle, mostly shotgun. defense is working on conditioning, quick llne ups, and opening holes for linebackers to raid the backfield.

chow uses the entire field for practice, and uses the entire session for drills, by offense, defense, by squads linebackers, d line, d backs, o line, qbs with rb, wr, te. the entire field, the entire practice is utilized. all players know which part of the field to report to for each session. all squads are kept busy and working throughout the practice.

sux, maybe I'll just attend the end one in may then. btw, thx for posting the practice reports. I've tried posting play-by-plays previously and those things are so hard to keep track of as things go live on the field.

april.27 practice 12

ching field. windy day, light towers swaying, yard markers blown away. offense in white, defense in green. no pads, no helmets.

alibis: offense: #5, #14, #22, #49 #81 defense: #49, #58 all held out of stretching/warm ups/gassers.

after hitting the playbooks for the first half of practice the team took the field for stretching/warm ups at the ewa goal. offense spread on the makai half with qbs in red shirts on their left. defense spread on the mauka half with kicking team on their right. players are enthusiastic, positive.

then gassers from the ewa goal line to the twenty. and gassers back to the goal. over and over. repeat. repeat. etc. and then more gassers.

everyone on the chow team participates in all stretching/warm ups/gassers. when i started watching spring practice when chow arrived at the u.h., i was told by other fans that his practices differed from jj and mac in that all practiced, throughout the entire practice. jj and mac had their divas that didn’t have to drill if they didn’t want to. at every practice i’ve watched with chow, everyone practices, drills, runs gassers, everything, every time, unless injured. no divas, no superstar attitudes.

offense then split to the kkhd half of the field and ran formation drills. #13 may not be named as no.1 quarterback, but, he is taking the alpha snaps. from the right hash, midfield, and left hash.

with no pads and no helmets, the offense ran their plays concentrating on getting the formation right, positions and marks, timing on passes, handoffs and hitting holes.

once that was done, qbs rotated through wr, te, and rb out of the backfield passes. passes right, passes left, crossing passes, over and over and over. starting position, marks, on the numbers, hash, comebacks, crossing. over and over and over.

the o line was at the kkhd goal mauka side working their blocking schemes. over and over and over.

kickers and holder were at the kkhd goal. kicking, kicking, kicking.

defense, meanwhile lined up at the ewa goal inside the twenty. getting lectured and running the front three positions, linebacker lanes. pass rushing, lanes, coverages. over and over and over.

every once in a while, assistant coaches on defense would pull a few players on the side for emphasis on basics and schemes.

end of practice. defense and offense always come together midfield, shake hands and celebrate another great practice. comrades on the field, ready to battle. they have each others’ backs. then the debriefing by coach chow.

after the spring fling at the stadium last week, chow seems to be concentrating on expanding the players’ knowledge of the playbook and introducing new schemes. with a game every week, it’s going to be critical to get to the first game with minimum self-inflicted injuries.

the team looks good. has good work habits, excellent work ethics. speed on play snapping will be something to watch. last season there were numerous game opportunities to snap the ball while defenses were shifting, in the neutral zone. or with twelve or more men on the field. hope this year’s team will be prepared to snap the ball whenever the opportunity for a free play occurs.
