3rd Weekend Norm took off Saturday night to Monday
3rd Weekend Norm took off Saturday night to Monday
God Bless Norm's wife, but I'm concerned that a D1 head coach taking off 2 days is not well prepared for game day. He can't be doing this for the remaining of the season. I'm not cold hearted, but if we go 2-3 wins this season, Norm could be done. He should really evaluate what's best for his family, his players, the university & the State of Hawaii.

IMO, Chow will consider what's best for his family, and his pocketbook - hopefully in that order.
I am the one who knocks.

Good call 808. Couldn't agree more.
Re: 3rd Weekend Norm took off Saturday night to Monday
i don't think taking the weekend off matters much. it's not like they just started losing 2 weeks ago. if he can spend some time with his wife before flying back, i think he should be allowed to do so. i wish that two days of prep really was the difference between winning and losing....
Re: 3rd Weekend Norm took off Saturday night to Monday
My only concern is knowing coach Jones and Mack studied game film all day on Sundays and we know what kind of success they had. Does 1.5 days of game prep make a difference? When you are 2-5 and 0-road, every bit helps.

He should be with his wife, given the circumstances. This should be an opportunity for Coach Jones, Wynn, Matthews, Naeole and Moses to step up and craft a plan to help the team by instigating recommended changes to present to Coach Chow upon his return.

His wife of almost 40 years had a stroke. She is convalescing. She needs his moral support. I see nothing wrong in this. He also has an assistant head coach and other assistant coaches to handle what needs to be done at this time. I don't think him being here on Sunday will make all that much of a difference against Nevada.
Furthermore, we don't know if he'll be doing this the rest of the season. But right now, I'm glad he's doing that. Ohana comes first.

They only practice Tue Wed and Thurs so it's not like he's missing out in coaching the players. However I'm sure he's thinking about his wife in times that we need for him to be thinking about the game. Maybe at the end of the year he might quit just so that he can be with his wife

I'm OK with it.

I understand about the prep time and stuff. However, if he is the ONLY one missing from the preparation picture then there needs to be some reorganization of the duties. He should be with his wife as much as he's able to. I truly believe that his dedication to his family will be an inspiration to this team. That's what he should be to the players.

That's the right thing to do. It's not about the $$$$ (now). Health insurance. I'm not a doctor, but I bet the medical bills are already a few hundred thousand $, IF he had no insurance coverage.808Hawaii wrote:IMO, Chow will consider what's best for his family, and his pocketbook - hopefully in that order.
Being employed is the best thing for his family.
If his wife was not sick, I'm sure this would be Chows last year. Given his wife is sick, Chow is not going anywhere and U.H. is not going to "fire" him, win or loose.

Also, I have not read anything public on how his wife is doing. Just guessing, she is probably in a coma or in some sort of vegetative state. That sucks big time. One day he got his wife, next day, she is "gone" even if she is still alive.
Again, I'm not a doctor, so I'm sure I'm wrong. Chow's wife will fully recover.

I have no issue with this as family is always first. One can always find another job or in Uncle Chow's case, retire.
Be humble and confident in yourself and all things you do.
Re: 3rd Weekend Norm took off Saturday night to Monday
Let's be honest. There's no difference between whether or not Chow takes time off on weekends or not. We still lose.
