Ole Miss’ seniors can transfer freely

Post by BigWave96744 »

Ole Miss’ NCAA sanctions mean seniors can transfer freely, but QB Shea Patterson can’t
Other teams could make a run on Ole Miss’ veterans.
By Alex Kirshner on December 1, 2017 11:48 am

The Ole Miss football program is facing heavy NCAA sanctions. The NCAA’s Committee on Infractions finally ruled on the Rebels’ years-long case and unveiled its punishment on Friday. That includes a bowl ban for 2018 (after Ole Miss self-imposed one for 2017), scholarship reductions, and hiring penalties for former coaches.

Because Ole Miss is bowl-banned for 2018, players entering their last year of eligibility are allowed to transfer from the program without sitting out a year in “academic residence.” That could lead other programs to make a run on Ole Miss’ roster, and it also might contribute to players deciding to leave school for the NFL.

The players who could be eligible immediately elsewhere include star defensive end Breeland Speaks, receiver DaMarkus Lodge, and backup quarterback Jordan Ta’amu

I agree, with Patterson likely going to Michigan they will need a starter

Not sure too many guys would want to come all the way out here just to play. They could just stay in Jackson since we'll probably be a longshot to make a bowl game next year. If they were to transfer, they probably go to somewhere like Memphis who is more likely to play in a bowl game.

Re: Ole Miss’ seniors can transfer freely

After five years, the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions finally issued a ruling in Ole Miss’s recruiting scandal on Friday morning.

The core penalties, per a source close to Ole Miss:

An additional bowl-ban year (2018).
Because of that total two-year bowl ban, NCAA rules give Ole Miss seniors the freedom to transfer elsewhere without sitting out a season.

Probation running concurrently with current probation for a total of four years.
Financial penalties, added to self-imposed sanctions, and totaling $179,000.
A total scholarship reduction of 13 over a period of years. That’s in addition to the 11 over four years that Ole Miss self-imposed, which already meant three or four fewer scholarship players per year.
Every coach named in the NCAA’s investigation has received a show-cause (essentially an NCAA blackball for a period of time) of varying lengths. That doesn’t include new head coach Matt Luke, who wasn’t named. Former head coach Hugh Freeze would receive a two-game suspension, if hired elsewhere. Former assistant David Saunders’ show-cause runs for eight years. Former staffer Barney Farrar faces five.
