Rick Pitino... Remember him?

Post by shrek2 »

I remember Rick Pitino from days before Larry Little. I didn't think much of Larry Little, as much as he supposedly loved coaching, could never develop Melton Werts but you knew that Rick Pitino had potential to be a head coach. Now after all his breaking of NCAA rules, its finally (maybe) caught up to him. It started in Hawaii and it ends in Louisville.

From Wikipedia:
Pitino's time at Hawaii was marred by a 1977 NCAA report on sanctions against the program. According to the report, Pitino was implicated in 8 of the 64 infractions that led the university to be placed on probation. The violations involving Pitino included providing round-trip air fare for a player between New York and Honolulu, arranging for student-athletes to receive used cars for season tickets, and handing out coupons to players for free food at McDonald's. He was also cited, along with the head coach, Bruce O'Neil, for providing misinformation to the NCAA and University of Hawaii officials. Also in 1977, the NCAA infractions committee recommended that Pitino and O'Neil be disassociated from Hawaii athletics. In 1989, Pitino would dismiss the report, saying "I didn't make any mistakes, I don't care what anybody says."

When I see a coach that walks like a duck and swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, I call that coach a crook.

. . . Or something like that.

"These allegations come as a complete shock to me," Pitino said in a statement. "I agree with the U.S. Attorney's Office that these third-party schemes, initiated by a few bad actors, operated to commit a fraud on the impacted universities and their basketball programs, including the University of Louisville. Our fans and supporters deserve better and I am committed to taking whatever steps are needed to ensure those responsible are held accountable."

Loosely translated, it sounds like Pitino could be charged with the Federal crime of money laundering especially with the transfer of $100K to a recruit's parents. Everyone knows that basketball players have been paid in some fashion since Lew Alcindor at least. It never stopped but the money transactions were never handled by a coach except in Pitino's case. Money transfers have usually been handled by alumni or boosters.
