2017 Expectations

Post by J-Rod »

Time is flying by. We're only a little over a month away from the Warriors reporting to fall camp in prep for the UMass game and the 2017 season. 2016 began with excitement, but also tempered expectations. Rolo and co. delivered a pleasant surprise to the fan base with a bowl berth and bowl victory. 7-7, including a win @Air Force that few fans saw coming.

This year, you can hardly believe your eyes. It's true, for the first time in what feels like forever, Hawaii does NOT play a horror of a schedule. In fact, Phil Steele's Toughest Opponent Records for 2017 rankings indicate Hawaii's 2017 opponents bring a 40% win percentage into this season from last season, good for 128th nationally. By no means can the schedule be considered easy, but after years of gauntlet's that limited any hope of a winning season, the avenue for success is now realistic.

Schedule is posted below. Following a 7-7 season, considering there are key returning players (Brown, Tavai, etc.) but some key losses (Kemp), and Hawaii having a more manageable schedule, what are your expectations for the 2017 season?

2017 Schedule

@UMass
Western Carolina
@UCLA
Bye
@Wyoming
Colorado State
@Nevada
San Jose State
Bye
San Diego State
@UNLV
Fresno State
@Utah State
BYU

My picks...

@UMass W - This game will be tougher than people think.
Western Carolina W - Old-fashioned JJ-era type whuppin'?
@UCLA L
Bye
@Wyoming L - I think UH gives Wyo fans an unexpected scare, but home field advantage (take that as you like...) is the difference in the end.
Colorado State L - Phil Steele picked the Rams to win the Mountain Division.
@Nevada W
San Jose State W
Bye
San Diego State W - Warriors get the West Division gorilla off their backs.
@UNLV L - Every year there is a loss to someone UH should probably beat. Hangover L in Vegas.
Fresno State W
@Utah State L
BYU L - Sitake's 2017 defense will be nasty.

7-6 (4-4)...play somebody in the Hawaii Bowl.

In my mind, the biggest game of the year. 7,220 feet above sea level and THE potential # 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, boys!!!!!! :D

Rolo is still rebuilding and short of overall depth, so I'll go with 7-5 and an invitation to the Hawaii Bowl:

@UMass - win in a squeaker.
Western Carolina - win big time.
@UCLA - loss, but we give the Bruins a run for their money.
Bye - great chance to rest up and heal.
@Wyoming - loss, can't beat the Cow Pokes in altitude.
Colorado State - win at home.
@Nevada - win on the road against their new coach.
San Jose State - win at home against their new coach.
Bye - another great chance to rest up and heal.
San Diego State - win in a shootout (no Donnel Pumphrey).
@UNLV - loss, when was the last time Hawaii won in the City of Lost Wages?
Fresno State - win at home against their new coach.
@Utah State - loss, another one on the road in altitude.
BYU - loss, Cougars still have the upper hand over the Warriors.
Cats don't have owners. Cats have servants.

Wins: UMass, West Car., Wyoming, Nevada, SJSU, UNLV, and Fresno.

Losses: UCLA, CSU, SDSU, USU, and BYU.

It's preseason, so I'm strictly picking wins over fading teams vs those with big support. I think a returning, winning quarterback for Hawaii coupled with some sensible management and a gelling strategy on both D and O will easily earn a bowl bid.

I haven't researched this very well. It's just my gutt.

Good luck.

Barring critical injuries, I think well win 8 during the regular season.

The UMass game is very important. Long trip, only 3.5 point favorite. Can't take that game lightly or it could result in a 2005 FAU-ish type loss. With all the positiveness going into this season, a loss there would be a real buzzkill to open the year.

I don't think a loss would be that critical. The FAU and Portland State losses were at home. The UMass game is 4 time zones away. Hope we win, that would get us off to a good start.

I can't believe Vegas has the over/under for Hawaii's win total at 4. Although we are still a team that's rebuilding, I think things are trending up! With a more favorable schedule I'm confident Hawaii should win more than that this coming year. I predict we go 7-5 with a trip back to the Hawaii bowl!

Actually, 5 time zones away. Don't forget Alaska.

I saw this a week back or so. Got an audible, "What?!" from me. Few members of the national media felt UH was the "free money" pick of all the 128 teams (them and BYU. 10 is high for almost anyone).

I tend to side with those who don't have a bias, but 4?! That feels like free money. 5-7 is worst case scenario for this team.
