2016 Closing Starters: 2 Senior Starters in Mitchem and Taylor (sustained FX to ankle with Hawaii down 1-2 to Minnesota in 2nd round of NCAA Tournament at Minnesota)

OH Annie Mitchem 6-3 Sr/Makenna Granato 6-0 So
Opposite *Nikki Taylor 6-4 Sr (2016 2nd Team NCAA AA)
Setter Norene Iosia 5-11 Fr
Middle Emily Maglio 6-3 Jr (2016 Honorable Mention AA)/Natasha Burns 6-5 RsFr
Libero Savanah Kahakai 5-8 Jr
Primary DS Emma Smith 5-8 Fr
DServer Clair Anderson 5-7 Jr
*With the score 1-2 in favor of the Gophers in the opening set, Nikki Taylor sprained her ankle on Minnesota’s OH Wilhite. Without Taylor it changed Minnesota’s defensive plan (their plan was to stack the block every time Nikki is in the front) Minnesota won by the score of 25-17, 25-17, and 25-19. IMHO Hawaii played their best defensive game of the season…imagine with Nikki in the lineup, with Minnesota’s defense keying on Taylor, it would have open up hitting opportunities for both Mitchem and Granato.

Barring injuries Possible 2017 Opening Night (Pre-Season) Starters:

OH *Kalei Greeley 6-2 Sr/**Makenna Granato 6-0 Jr
Opposite ++Casey Castillo 6-3 Jr
Setter Norene Iosia 5-11 So
Middle ^^Emily Maglio 6-3 Sr/$$Natasha Burns 6-5 RsSo
Libero Savanah Kahakai 5-8 Sr
DS Gianna Guinasso 5-9 Sr or Anderson 5-7 Sr
DServer Claire Anderson 5-7 Sr

Versus the 2nd Team:
OH ***Kirsten Sibley 6-2 So/Arden Misraje 6-2 Fr
Opposite Shaney Lipscomb 6-2 Fr RS/MB; McKenna Ross 5-10 So
Setter Kendra Koelsch 6-1 Sr S/RS; Faith Ma’afala 5-8 RsJr S/DS
Middle Sophia Howling 6-3 Fr MB/OH; Skylar Williams 6-2 Fr
DS Rika Okino 5-5 RsFR/Janelle Gong 5-9 Fr
*Will Greeley come back in the best volleyball shape and improve on her over-all 2015 stats?

**No matter what is said at other volleyball websites, Makenna will be a starter-and probably be the go-to-OH; however, she need to work on improving her vertical jump with an off-season plyometric daily regimen, i.e. Victoria Prince off-season plyometric workouts increased her vertical by 10” ditto Ching of Warrior Volleyball. But, most of all she need to hit smart by mixing up her shots versus heat hit only.

++Casey Castillo has had Limited game-experience the last 2-years playing as an OH or Opposite; but, her 6-3 size is a huge plus. IMHO, I believe she has the skill-set to terminate that D-Set at a respectable hitting %. If she can block around .85 per set, and touch a lot of balls for the back-row to make plays and transition to a quick offense.

^^We already know what Maglio (only returning AA <honorable mention> on the roster) brings to the game as a MB--the coaching staff will have to make a decision after Spring Training and not flip-flop Emily from Opposite to MB during the pre-season and BWC season. IMHO keep Maglio as MB1 and play-all rotation, i.e. Angelica Ljunquist – 4 time AA, NCAA POY. A 6-3 Maglio and a 6-5 Burns should be able to hold their own versus any top-notch program--definitely the best MB tandem in the BWC. Hopefully moving her to Opposite will not be a move that will hurt the Wahine, i.e. keeping Sudduth at OH and Willoughby at Opposite from the get go; (at that time Wahine’ volleyball was a 90% (high-wide sets) left-side attacking offense). Maglio has a good chance to improve on her STATS (IMHO her STATS were better than a few of the MB who made 1st, 2nd and 3rd team AA); whereas, as a RS terminating the DSet, she will be a question yet to be answered…if the coaching staff thinks she’ll be posting AA numbers at RS with just a year at that position is wishful thinking. Hopefully the coaching staff will give Maglio and Castillo the reps at Opposite during spring training…go deep in analyzing both, and make a determination before going into full camp. Flip-flopping Maglio and Castillo will only hurt each player’s ability to be the best they can be; thus, hurting the Wahine’ chances of dominating the BWC and going deep into the NCAA Tournament.

$$There are also doubts coming out of other volleyball websites concerning Natasha Burns’ MB skills (Overall Stats- .323 hitting %, 0.90 Blocks/set; Conference Stats-.395 Hitting %, 0.94 Blocks/Set); IMHO, this coming season will be her breakout year. With a year under her belt, she will come back with a quicker stronger arm-swing terminating the quick sets from Iosia (IMHO Norene should have been an All-American in 2016…it was pure bias for players from elite programs, i.e. ditto with Nikki Taylor making 2nd team—at least Volleyball Mag and PrepVolleyball.com had her as a 1st Team All-American.

***Kirsten Sibley will challenge for one of the starting OH position--If Greeley can’t play up to her 2015 form, it will open the door for Kirsten as OH2.

Bottom line, barring injuries, i.e. 2016 fall-camp, the coaching staff must have a set lineup, preferably a week or two, before the 1st pre-season game. Because of the talent and depth, a SET 1st team will be challenged by the 2nd team every day in practice. IMHO the Wahine’ 2nd team would challenge for 2nd in the BWC. Second team: Sibley Next 150, Sophia Howling #95 Senior Ace, Skylar Williams Next 150, Shaney Lipscomb Next 150 (just missed the top-100 listing), and Arden Misraje offered by USC as a preferred walk-on, Kendra Koelsch would be a starting setter for a lot of D1 programs. The 2nd team, blessed with volleyball athleticism, and size will make the 1st unit ready for the pre-season.

2018 Roster 14 (9 Scholarship - 2Sr, 3 Jr, 3So, 1Fr: 5 Walk-on – 1Sr, 1Jr, 3So)

I personally don't care too much for speaking of "The Next-150."

Lipscomb, having said, just missed the Top 100. Her contention has been, that in jrs, she's been forced to play both MB and OPP. Just as you alluded, this never bodes well for Castillo--who I believe should be left at left-side (as Shoji initially projected). Too much movement lacks concerted effort.

too.

Ma'afala should be told that she's in the running for S2/scholarship. She could likely go without $ but KK is also student teaching next year. This leaves one more athletic scholarship open. See: Oregon WVB team

Ma'afala is the Setter/DS that a VERY defensive minded Ah Mow-Santos is looking for.

Go w a multidimensional MB starting scheme *I say* to ultimately leave AA Maglio in her current position, as easier on Norene. The incoming talent makes for many opportunities, here.

Greeley I'm pretty certain may need cortisone injections to make it through next season..fine. I would also like to see McKenna come back leaner this upcoming fall.

Mitchem Norene or Kahakai will end up on the Pan Cup roster (for later this month--May). ONLY one, I fear will make it, but I hope that it's Norene and not Mitchem.
Mitchem should just go pro already.

My bad. This particular roster has been out for a couple of weeks already, lol.
Looks like Grananto is the only UH rep on team USA this year.

It's sad because everybody knows that Kahakai has what it takes to go to the next level.

Kahakai should spend the summer in SoCal w Norene's family. They should together--as the heart and soul of all that's ball handling on a six person team--play in beach tournaments from Santa Barbara down to San Diego.

I like that although she's from Sweden, she speaks something like 7-9 different languages. Amazing!
