If I understand the selection process for the OIA, it looks like only three girls teams will be competing on Kauai: Mililani (7 runners), Leilehua (5 runners), and Roosevelt (6 runners). Anyone care to double check? ;)

Don't forget Radford. The girls division qualifies 50 runners (according to the Coach's Packet on hhsaa.org). Radford's 5th runner qualified as the last runner.

Radford has four female runners. 50th is the points, not the place.

State Cross Country Map Interpretation:
How is everyone interpreting the finish of the State XC Course ?(http://www.sportshigh.com/files/content ... xc_map.pdf)
So far, I've heard it two ways:
1) at the end of the 2nd Lap, the runners go around the Start/Finish field and then head into the finish (the green arrows).
2) at the end of the 2nd Lap, the runners make a sharp turn onto the field adjacent to the Start/Finish field following the green arrows straight into the finish. This finish seems to make more sense, except for the sharp turn, as there will be too many runners overlapping right at the entrance to the finish field.

Is it the top 48 or 49 boys from the OIA that qualify for States?

Wow, some of these runners have vastly improved from last year. It must be thru lots of hard work by the athletes, great guidance by the coaching and terrific competition throughout the season. Everyone who has made it to the State Championship deserves credit for putting in a tremendous effort throughout the season. They're all winners in my book.

As for the course map, in my opinion I think that they are supposed to go around the field before they finish, but it does create a traffic problem where course intersects. This version of the map at the Mililani site, http://www.geocities.com/milhsxc/2009/I ... us_med.jpg, has the route going around the field before finishing.

The OIA qualifying methods are confusing, not only because they could potentially not send any full teams to the State meet, but also because they have different qualifying numbers for boys and girls. For Boys its 48 and Girls is 50 qualifiers.

Thank you, 2LeftFeet!

Is there a list out of all the runners who qualified for the State Meet?

In the past, the HHSAA would post a Media/Press Release (http://www.sportshigh.com/files/content ... 1030_2.pdf) on their site of all the submitted entries from schools of the 5 Leagues in the State. This is include in the State Program they sell at the meet, but I'm not sure if they are going to do it this year because of the budget cuts. The entry deadline for all of the schools was 12:00
noon, Monday, October 26, 2009, so if there is going to be any press release, it would be sometime either today or tomorrow.

I think that everyone is seriously underestimating what Jordan Thibodeau can do. He may have only started running distance last year, but he has been showing a lot of promise and good training over the summer. If anyone has seen him race in track or in cross country they can see that he is a very strong, quick (leg speed wise), and tactically aware runner. He is one runner that has shown great improvement in his times and his racing over the season, and could be the favored underdog in upsetting the proposed duel between Martinez and Murphy!

2LeftFeet - the map for the state course can be a bit confusing but if you've been there and hopefully the layout of the terrain is still the same, then the gap between the start/finish area and field across from there (green arrow section) is a ditch. The very same ditch that everyone had to hop across or run down in 8 years ago when they ran the course going the opposite direction. Runners will most likely run the loop twice then do the green arrow section. Having them do the start/finish loop area could easily confuse... not the runners but the officials.
As far as the entries being due on Mon., well on paper that is correct, but any A.D. who worked on furlough Friday because of a scheduled athletic event had to take Mon. off as their furlough day. With that in mind, they weren't on campus to verify the entries, sign them and fax them over to HHSSA. Some schools turned them in today, so there will be a delay and hopefully they can print who's who (as far as entries are concerned) by Friday.

They just posted the videos from the last State XC race at Island School, Kauai in 2001, on the Mililani site, where you can see the infamous ditch at the edge of the start and finish field.
