Wow! Hubble Telescope Sees Rare 3-Moon Shadow Dance on Jupiter

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has captured three of Jupiter's moons marching across the huge planet's disc, a stunning sight that happens only once or twice every 10 years.
The rare triple-moon conjunction on Jupiter, which Hubble witnessed on Jan. 24, involved Io, Callisto and Europa — three of the gas giant's four Galilean moons (so named because they were discovered by astronomer Galileo Galilei in the early 17th century).

NASA has just released the biggest picture ever. Seriously. It would take more than 600 HD screens to display the entire billion-and-a-half pixels in this Hubble Space Telescope picture.

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has opened the farthest reaches of the heavens to our eyes. It was sent into orbit 25 years ago this week. To celebrate, NASA picked 25 of the telescope's most memorable images.
What NASA says about Hubble:
On April 24, 1990, the space shuttle Discovery lifted off from Earth with the Hubble Space Telescope nestled securely in its bay. The following day, Hubble was released into space, ready to peer into the vast unknown. Since then, Hubble has reinvigorated and reshaped our perception of the cosmos and uncovered a universe where almost anything seems possible within the laws of physics. Hubble has revealed properties of space and time that for most of human history were only probed in the imaginations of scientists and philosophers alike. Today, Hubble continues to provide views of cosmic wonders never before seen and is at the forefront of many new discoveries.

With about a million observations under its belt during its 25 years of service, some of the Hubble Space Telescope's most memorable images have been of the vastness of space and the early days of the universe. These "deep-field" images actually improved over the years because shuttle astronauts were able to upgrade the observatory. This episode, entitled "The Incredible Time Machine" shows us how Hubble has been able to give us a glimpse of a cosmos in its formative years.

The James Webb Space Telescope has a series of mirrors to get the light from the universe into the observatory's cameras. After the light reaches the primary mirror, it is then bounced up 25 feet to the secondary mirror. This much smaller mirror is deployed using three arms, or struts. Engineers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center are conducting tests to ensure a successful deployment after launch. This episode of Behind the Webb shows us the scope of the task at hand and how the test is being done to simulate a zero-gravity environment.

This episode of "Hubble at 25" uncovers Hubble's key role in the study of planets beyond our own solar system. Thousands of "exoplanet" candidates have been discovered. While Hubble is not responsible for most exoplanet detections, it is able to examine the chemical compositions of their atmospheres. Since these planets are too far away to ever visit in the forseeable future, analyzing their atmospheres provides critical clues about the existence of life elsewhere in the universe.

Mauna Kea is the best spot on earth to have high powered telescopes. In the middle of the Pacific, no light pollution. In the middle of lava fields, no dust pollution. Easy to access to build and use.
The Hawaiians came here in the first place because they were expert Astronomers. Instead of protesting the use of Mauna Kea for telescopes, the smart Hawaiians are jumping aboard and leading the world in furthering our understanding of the stars and our universe. The ancestors would be prouder of these smarter Hawaiians than those protesting.
I don't think this Hubble SPACE telescope is sitting on Mauna Kea or Mauna Loa...
