NASA's Juno Spacecraft Malfunctioned While In Orbit Around Jupiter

The orbiter around Jupiter will have to wait for almost two months to begin its main science phase.

A main engine burn on the Juno spacecraft scheduled for Wednesday October 19 has been postponed until Juno completes another orbit around
Jupiter, a trip that currently takes 53.4 days. The engine burn was intended to accelerate the spacecraft so it could orbit Jupiter in just 14 days,
after which the main science phase of the mission was going to begin and the majority of the data taken.

According to NASA, the Juno mission team decided to postpone the burn after two valves on the spacecraft's main engine failed to properly open.
The spacecraft needs to be at its closest to Jupiter for the engine burn to achieve the proper acceleration and trajectory, so the team will have to
wait until December 11, when Juno completes a full orbit at its current speed, to attempt to fire the engine again and insert into its trajectory for
its main science mission.

How do you choose just 10? Well, we couldn't.
Here are 17 memorable images from 2016, our penultimate year in space:

Fifty Years Ago Today, Apollo 1 Astronauts Lost Their Lives in Our Journey to the Stars

The tragedy that claimed the Apollo 1 astronaut looms as a reminder of the dangers of venturing into the unknown.

Project Apollo was first proposed by the Eisenhower administration in early 1960, even before Alan Shepherd became the first American to fly
in space in May 1961. It was conceived to develop more advanced spaceflight technologies, including a spacecraft that could hold three people
instead of one, and it had an obvious end-game target: the moon. "Apollo riding his chariot across the sun was appropriate to the grand scale
of the proposed program," NASA manager Abe Silverstein, who named the program, explained in 1960.

I wish NASA would get back to space exploration instead of making excuses for manmade global warming.

Jupiter Is a Jerk

The biggest bully in the solar system has been wreaking havoc since the day it was born.

About 4.6 billion years ago, when our sun finally accumulated enough gas and pressure to ignite the nuclear fusion at its core and become
a star, things were just coming together in the solar system. The remaining dust and debris swirling around the newborn sun hadn't had
the chance to coalesce into individual planets yet.

Which planets formed first from this massive disk is still a matter of debate. What we do know is that roughly 100 million years after the
sun's first light, one planet was the hungriest, voraciously ingesting any material that happened to pass too close.

That planet, of course, is Jupiter.

NASA just captured a photo of Jupiter that you won’t believe is real

NASA has managed to capture some pretty stunning photos of all the cool stuff they’ve spotted over the years, and rarely does it fail
to amaze. There’s images of planet surfaces, the rings of Saturn, and even black holes flying through space totally unchecked. Rarely,
however, does a photo look so unreal that at first glance you’d be likely to mistake it for a work of Earthling art. A new photo captured
by NASA’s Juno spacecraft falls into that category, and oh what a sight it is.

NASA is Uploading Hundreds of Historic Videos to YouTube

Peeks behind history.

NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center, based out of Edwards Air Force Base, has been at the
forefront of aeronautic research for decades. They've decided to open up their vaults and showcase
some of that research on YouTube, where they've uploaded around 300 films of their past work.

This includes experimental planes from 1965, lunar rovers going through test runs, supersonic jets
practicing mid-air refueling, you name it. It's a move that's been years in the making. Prior to the
uploading, one would have to find the Dryden Aircraft Movie Collection through the Dryden Flight
Research Center website, Armstrong's name prior to 2014.

Voyager's Most Amazing Discoveries Were Not Planets, But Moons

The Voyager probes launched to study the planets, but they discovered the wonder of the solar system's moons.

By David Grossman
September 5, 2017

NASA

Jupiter's turbulent atmosphere, Saturn's morphing rings, the tilted axis of Uranus, and Neptune's Great Dark Spot—40 years ago,
humanity had a vague understanding at best of the solar system's far-out worlds. And then came the Voyager probes' tour of the
solar system.

Voyager 2 actually launched first, on August 20, 1977. Voyager 1, the faster craft, left Earth 40 years ago today—September 5, 1977.
With thousands of photographs, Voyagers 1 and 2 revealed the outer solar system in all its splendor for the very first time. But for as
much as they told us about the gas giants planets, the legendary probes may have made their most shocking revelations by showing
us that our own moon is one of the least interesting natural satellites around.
