10 things you didn't know about The Empire Strikes Back

Here's a slightly different version of the battle between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader at the end of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. It's just one of many revelations in a new making-of book. More rare concept art below.

The Making Of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back by J.W. Rinzler comes out today, and it's not just essential for fans of the classic film. It's also a must-read for anybody who's interested in the creative process, because it goes into excruciating detail, on a day-to-day basis, on the troubled genesis of an amazing film. You get inside the heads of everybody involved with it, and you see how much pain went into every frame of this movie. In particular, there's a 17-page section in which you get a transcript of director Irwin Kerschner and the actors — especially Harrison Ford — agonize over every second of the crucial carbonite freezing chamber scene, trying to get as much emotional truth and reality out of it as possible. This was on set, after the screenplay had already been revised several times, and every moment of that sequence gets rehashed and debated until it's (arguably) perfect.

There's tons and tons of eye-popping concept art, including tons of versions of the Luke/Vader fight. Here are a few of them:

The Not-Shitty Star Wars Prequel That Never Happened

Irvin Kershner directed the greatest Star Wars movie of all, The Empire Strikes Back. It may be time to forgive George Lucas, but it's hard not dreaming about the saga of Anakin's rise and fall depicted by more capable hands.

In an interview coinciding with Empire's 30th anniversary, Kershner reveals that, had the prequels been made 10 years after the original series, closer to when Lucas had originally planned, he would've agreed to directing one of them.

#1. Force Unleashed 2 out tomorrow

#2. Not sure if many of you are that interestied in this news but ......................

THEY'RE GOING TO MAKE MORE STAR WARS MOVIES!!! SEQUELS TO THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY!!!

This is the link to the story. Site is BOGGED DOWN since they broke the news yesterday.
http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=co ... &Itemid=71
Don’t start packing up your lawn chairs and igloo coolers just yet, but there will once again be “camping out” for a Star Wars movie. IESB has learned some news about the future of the Star Wars franchise.

First, let me remind our readers of IESB’s past scoops so anyone doubting the news will be aware. From Joss Whedon directing the Avengers, to the recent announcement of Disney’s planned renegotiation of the Paramount Marvel deal, to the countless casting scoops, directing scoops, to our solid sources at Lucasfilm.

Confirmed IESB scoops specific to the Star Wars universe include the first announcement of the PG-13 rating of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, the first word of a live action Star Wars TV series as well as the Clone Wars animated series. Yes, all of these Lucasfilm scoops were all first reported here on IESB.

Now on to our newest big Lucasfilm scoop, ready? George Lucas is plotting to create new Star Wars movies at the ultra top-secret Skywalker Ranch.

This is déjà vu of the mid 90′s when Uncle George starting tweaking the Holy Trilogy to gear up for the Special Editions. That was his first step in moving forward with the eventual prequel trilogy.

It’s happening all over again, Lucasfilm is already hard at work converting the entire Star Wars saga into 3D which will be released starting with Episode I: The Phantom Menace in 2012. The word from our ultra top-secret Lucasfilm insider is that Lucas has gotten the itch and is already looking ahead into launching an entirely new trilogy in that galaxy far, far away.

What do we know? First of all, these new film will have nothing to do with the live action television series currently in development. That show already has over 50 scripts ready to go and plenty of pre-production time and money has been spent on artwork and storyboards. Once that show goes into production, Lucasfilm hopes to be able to produce at least 100 episodes since that is the threshold for syndication in the United States.

IESB has been told fans can expect the new trilogy after the entire saga is released in 3D which is expected to be complete around 2015 or 2016.

Uncle George’s modus operandi has not changed, the plan is that he will self finance the new trilogy after he rakes in an expected $500 – $750 million dollars with the re-release of the entire Star Wars Saga in 3D and on Blu-Ray.

The ideal plan, according to our spy at Skywalker Ranch, is to be able to release a new Star Wars film within 24 months after the release of the last re-re-release (is that right?) of Return of the Jedi 3D.

Too early for story details but one thing that our source is certain about, they will not be prequels but instead sequels. It’s not for certain if they will be the long awaited Episodes 7, 8 and 9 but could instead be Episodes 10, 11 and 12 or possibly even further out in the Star Wars timeline. And by giving space in the timeline, possibly even as far as 100 years or 1,000 years in the Star Wars universe future, Lucas avoids having to make these stories “fit in” with what the previous stories have told.

According to our sources, the most likely scenario for the films is that they will exist in the same universe but will not have anything to do with the Skywalker Clan. That story has been told, that starship has sailed.

What has caused this sudden change of heart for Uncle George? Well, besides the obvious possible billions that a new Star Wars trilogy will take in, our source tells us that George has gotten motivated with the success the Clone Wars animated series, the video games and also with the success of Avatar.

Can we expect Lucasfilm to confirm our story? Have they ever? Nope, I am sure that they will spin this or completely deny the story, but we will stand 100% behind our source.

Interesting comments from Harrison Ford about Han Solo....

http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/st ... rd_1182999
HARRISON FORD, the 68-year-old Hollywood actor famed for playing the role of 'Han Solo' in the Star Wars movies, says that the character was not very interesting and should have been killed off.

In an interview with ABC News, Ford suggested that the Captain of the Millennium Falcon should have died in the last Star Wars movie, 'Return of the Jedi'. When asked about playing the legendary role, Ford said, "As a character he was not so interesting to me. I thought he should have died in the last one, just to give it some bottom". However, the 68-year-old said that director GEORGE LUCAS rejected the idea, adding, "George didn't think there was any future in dead Han toys".

Ford made the comments during an interview to promote his new movie 'Morning Glory', in which he plays a news anchor on a struggling morning television show. The film also stars RACHEL MCADAMS and JEFF GOLDBLUM, and is directed by ROGER MICHELL. The actor has a number of future projects lined up, including the 2011 adventure movie 'Cowboys and Aliens', and he this week expressed his desire to make another INDIANA JONES film.

The Original TIE Fighters Were Purple

By Jesus Diaz

Roaming through discarded exposures and lighting film tests, a cinema enthusiast has discovered that George Lucas originally wanted Star Wars' Imperial TIE Fighters to be purple. Thankfully for everyone except Prince, this horrible idea was discarded for technical reasons.

Gene was told by one of the Star Wars model makers that the initial color of the TIE fighter was "a shade of maroon"—which in theory is a mix between crimson and brown. In reality, it looks like a dark pinkish purple on these shots. He points out that "this was an interesting choice as everything in the movie appears to be a different shade of gray or off white. Technically, it was an interesting choice as well since a maroon model probably wouldn't be as prone to bluespill as a gray model." I think that by "interesting" he really was trying to say "hideous."

JJ Abrams is rumored to direct the movie. He directed the last Star Trek movie and directed Star Trek:Into the Darkness that's coming out this year.

Are you a late-model "Star Trek" fan with issues about your guy J.J. Abrams jumping ship in order to direct the next "Star Wars" film? Or maybe a "Star Wars" devotee filled with dread at having your favorite franchise be under the control of someone who's directed two "Star Trek" films?

If so, there's a musical for you. "JJ Abrams Star Wars -- The Musical," to be precise.
