Food Thread Past
I'm kinda new to these boards. I have to say, there's so much traffic especially on this particular board. Part of the reason is because there's not enough interesting threads. And what's more interesting than food?
What are your favorite restaurants from the past?
I miss a lot of them.
PIONEER CHICKEN. The best fried chicken ever. They were bought out by Popeye's Chicken a few decades ago. There are only three left in the world, two in LA and one in Bell Gardens, CA. Whenever I go to Los Angeles, I have to get some. I go to the Bell Gardens one and eat at least five pieces. Best chicken (but the potatoes and cole slaw not soo good).
FLAMINGO CHUCK WAGON. Use to have many family functions there, especially birthday parties. All the prime rib you can eat.
KIMURAYA BAKERY. The best yeast pastries ever. Hands down, the best donut. When the owner announced that he was closing the bakery because he was moving back to Japan, I was nearly in tears.
MRS. FIELDS. Why oh why did they have to go away? Whenever on the maindland, I look for one so I can bring back some White Chocolate Macs. The ones sold in boxes are not the same as fresh baked. They're bigger, thicker, . . . just better.
What are some of the food joints you miss from years gone by?

Beacon Restaurant in Aiea. I can't believe that for all of the years that I lived in Pearl City that I never visited that place until one morning my wife and I decided to have breakfast there and they had a really great buffet with good food and a great price. Unfortunately, they shut down a couple of weeks after that and a karaoke place took over. Wuz really bummed out.

Another one was D'amico Pizza on the north shore. Used to drive from Waipahu to the north shore for pizza.

Pearl City Tavern- the monkey bar and the black lacquer boxes of very good Japanese food. The TEMPURA was off the hook....deep fried and flaky, sweet potato was my favorite...

The food was pretty good at Futaba. The old lady there was so nice. The younger waitress, not so patient. The restaurant there now is really good. All kinds of food - quesadillas, fried squid, burgers, plate lunch. Called Tonio's or something like that.Irse wrote:I used to like Oinks in the Ward Center and Futaba in Waipahu.

Oh that reminds me. Rosie's Cantina in Haleiwa was my favorite Mexican restaurant on the island. And Mama's Mexican Kitchen on School Street before that.Irse wrote:Another one was D'amico Pizza on the north shore. Used to drive from Waipahu to the north shore for pizza.

Kau Kau Lunch Wagon: Silver lunch wagon at Kewalo Basin back in the '70s. Used to have mixed plate, practically anything with spaghetti. Diamondhead Soda.
We used to love this lunch wagon but actually, anything after a day at the beach was ono.
