Awesome. Sportsbow did such a good job on this last year that I thought he could do a much better job than I can.

PS. Sorry if you posted in the other thread, I'm getting rid of it so we can have one thread instead of two like last year.

All of the greyshirt players will count for this year also. So that means 22-8=14. If Brennan get a scholarship too, then we have 13 left to give.

there are other schollies available when people leave. For example, Jack Rolovich opened up one; I bet it goes to Brennan. Others have left too, like Kala Latuselu. I don't know for sure but I think Amani Purcell is not a walk-on but will get a schollie if he isn't on one now.

I could be wrong but, isn't there a rule that a freshmen walk-on can't receive a scholarship until he becomes a junior? I thought I heard that somewhere, but not 100% sure. Do anyone know this for sure?

I agree. I'm sure JJ will take care of him. He improved alot this year, i especially like the fact that i don't have to sweat the extra points like with ah yat.

don't let dan learn or play golf. I don't want him to know what the words "the yips" means or even hears the expression. ah yat had a great leg, but man, pat's were and adventure

Hawthorne finds paradise in Hawaii
By JAMES JONES
jkjones@sunherald.com

Hawaii is considered a popular vacation resort because of its beautiful beaches and mild climate.

Gulf Coast wide receiver C.J. Hawthorne fell in love with the 50th state during an official recruiting visit to the University of Hawaii two months ago and quickly gave a verbal commitment.

The former St. Martin standout signed with the Rainbow Warriors during the junior college signing period last month. Hawthorne is now enrolled at Hawaii.

Hawthorne, ranked among The Sun Herald's Top 50 junior college recruits, chose Hawaii over Troy, Marshall and Louisiana-Monroe. None of the in-state schools made a serious scholarship offer.

"I sent film to Hawaii at the beginning of the season," Hawthorne said. "They were impressed and wanted to see more film of me. Hawaii's an awesome place. I love the people and the island. The offense is really nice."

Hawaii has the option of either redshirting Hawthorne or finding a spot to utilize his 4.4 speed on offense and special teams.

The 6-foot, 170-pound Hawthorne becomes the second South Mississippi player ever to sign with Hawaii. Southwest punter Tim Wright of Bay St. Louis signed with the Rainbow Warriors three years ago.

Gulf Coast had a total of five players that landed Division I scholarships from its South Division title squad. The others are wide receiver Tony Burks, defensive lineman Sean Merrill, running back Dantrell Savage and linebacker Jwuan Ward. Burks, Merrill and Savage ranked 2-3-4 on The Sun Herald's JUCO list.

Burks signed with Mississippi State. Merrill and Ward are already enrolled at Southern Miss and Baylor, respectively. Savage has verbally committed to Oklahoma State and graduates in May.

"I loved their atmosphere on campus," Savage said. "The coaches were real nice, and I got along with all of them. I like coach Mike Gundy. I plan on being an impact player and help them turn things around."

Merrill, ranked third, enters Southern Miss with an impressive resume'. The former LSU signee was a first-team NJCAA All-America and nominated for its defensive player of the year award.
