Finding Jewels Buried in the Spring Depth Chart

With Spring practices underway, we have depth at DL and WR this year! One opportunity for the team, would be to see if those buried in the team's depth chart, could contribute in other positions and help the team.

Just for kicks, here are a few suggestions to consider:

1.Azia Se'ei - use him at the RB position. At 5'-11" and 275 pounds, he could prove to be an effective blocker in the RNS and could also be an effective short yardage power back, in addition to Furuta. Azia has power and may prove to be difficult to tackle at 5'-11" and 275 pounds. He played at fullback and DT before transferring to UH. In HS, he was named region and team MVP at running back.

2. Kahale Huddleston - If he is buried on the depth chart at WR, with Byrd and Ward as starters, put him on the field at RB. As a senior in HS, he rushed for 1,458 yards and 35 touchdowns. 35 touchdowns. He was named to the Star Advertiser All-State First team as a Running back, named BIIF Division 1 Offensive Player of the Year and received the Cover2 Tommy Kaulukukui Award Offensive Player of the Year Award. He may prove to be too talented to sit on the bench.

Azia Seei isn’t going to RB. He was in the rotation at DT last year and he may push for more playing time there.

K.K. Padello, as mentioned has been moved to RB from DE. I can’t give an opinion on him as an RB since haven’t see him there enough yet.

Alakai Mashima is a RS/SO WO safety that may move up the depth chart. He has a chance to get into the rotation. He has some ability and is the kind of player that seems to be in the right place a lot. He played in 4 games last year.

Kai Kaneshiro is a RS/FR that played in 4 games last year. He has a good chance to be in the rotation at NB.

Wyatt Tucker is a RS/SO and is the front runner for the LS job.

Akil Francisco is a RS/SO that has a chance to get into the rotation at CB. He’s a feisty, all heart kind of guy.

Parker Higgins is RS/JR transfer LB that I’m interested in seeing and wondering if he can be the next Kanai Picanco. Picanco came out of no where last year and got into the rotation at LB. Physically Higgins looks like a LB should look.

Foi Shaw is a FR,WO DT that I’ll be keeping an eye on. He’s a high character student-athlete that I’m hoping for the best for.

Tiger Peterson is an early entry FR and is participating in spring practice already. I think he’s at NB and SS. Since he is already practicing in the spring, he might have a chance to get playing time this season.

I just want a RB that can run passing routes out of the backfield, can catch and beat LBs one-on-one. That’s the jewel I want as a priority. Second a DE that can pass rush and play thr run. Three a shut down CB.

What kind of bugs me is that according to the HSA,
"Fred Holly III sprinted away for a 23-yard touchdown. Hekili Keli‘iliki burst for 21 yards on a second-and-3 play. And Miles Reed planted his left hand on the turf to spin free for a 13-yard gain."

I'm hoping that our defense is shored up so that they don't get continuous long gains in the running game as they did last year against UH.

Today’s practice had just ended but there was one more point to be made. In the post-practice circle, coach Nick Rolvich awarded a scholarship to nose tackle Azia Se‘ei.

It comes at a perfect time. The help Se‘ei receives through the GI Bill — his father was in the Navy for more than 25 years — was set to expire this summer. Se‘ei is set to earn a bachelor’s degree in May 2020.

Se‘ei also has been playing on the first-team defense in recent practices.
