Hunter Hughes - how are scholarship players picked?
I don't know what criteria was used to determine that Hunter Hughes deserved a scholarship. He was never going to be more than 4th in the depth chart and after the article below, I guess he dis'ed the UH program or implied that UH is a second rate program. I have no problems with him saying nice things about Dru Brown but there's nothing good about playing for UH.
https://pistolsfiringblog.com/qa-with-f ... dru-brown/
In the article he says the following:
"There would be times when maybe we’d be up or we’d be in a tight game, and coach would feel like, ‘Maybe we gotta go with something else,’ and I remember Dru saying, ‘Don’t you dare take the ball away from me. We got this, we still got this in our hands.’"
This tells me that our QB coach or head coach was weak in light of the failures in the last two years.
Let's pick players with character to give remaining scholarships to!

Well a lot of what he said about UH is the truth. Everyone knows it. It’s not some dark hidden secret. As far as figuring out who to give scholarships to, well you can only vet a player/person so far. And as far as I know Hunter was an outstanding teammate and student and yes he was probably never gonna play, but there are a bunch of players on scholarship that are never gonna play. Do we only give scholarships to players that we know are gonna play?

I figure that we should talk to players including the walk-ons and assess the following:
1) Find out where they are from and where they played football and are there potential recruits there if they are from out of state. Also, since this is a gift to give them a scholarship, find out if they are bleeding green and if UH is the best program. After all, they can always walk on to the Big 5 if that is their dream especially if they consider a school a top notch program. You can say good and bad about any program but if the coach commits to you, you gotta reciprocate.
2) Have the assistant coaches interview the kids from time to time to find out where their heads are at. If they don't praise the program, they don't believe in the mission which means they will just be doing enough to get by. I rather see the local kids get the scholarships since we know their hearts are in the islands.
In my opinion, I don't know if we will get much "goodwill" from Hunter Hughes. BTW, what is an outstanding teammate if he doesn't try to make the program he came from being the best? The goodwill is adding value to the team like in the business sense.

Dru's team was 3-9 last season. Rolo/Stutz should have taken the ball away from him and tried something different.

You make some points, albeit very nitpicky. I would ask you this. What do you know about Hunter besides from what he said in this interview and him being football player?shrek2 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 10, 2018 9:24 am I figure that we should talk to players including the walk-ons and assess the following:

Nothing in there is a diss. Maybe the part where he says OSU has athletic phenoms compared to Hawaii but that's facts too.

Only what shows up in the news. His scholarship and how it was given to him made the news, the fact that he was never on the depth chart because its only three deep and the fact that he likes the OSU program more than the UH program. Can you tell me what he did for the UH program? You seem to have insight. Did he keep more players from transferring last year? Did he encourage or escort new recruits into the program? Did he help in trying to get UH better than the 3-9 season?EITSwarrior wrote: ↑Fri Aug 10, 2018 11:22 amYou make some points, albeit very nitpicky. I would ask you this. Re: Hunter Hughes - how are scholarship players picked?
First off, any player in their right mind would love Oklahoma State’s football program more than Hawaii’s. That’s the god honest truth. No, I don’t know Hunter personally, but I’m also not gonna question who the coaches give out scholarships to. They see the players and how they work and what kind of people they are more than us fans do. If they feel Hunter or any other player earned it, whether it’s them encouraging their fellow teammates or helping them get ready for their opponent in practice, then good for them.shrek2 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 10, 2018 2:17 pmOnly what shows up in the news. Re: Hunter Hughes - how are scholarship players picked?
The only news that a mainland recruit has to the news regarding UH is what's on the internet. So, you think there's no chance to get a Sapoanga to Hawaii over Nebraska? Do you think that most people think Hawaii is a second rate program?
Re: Hunter Hughes - how are scholarship players picked?
Yah...it took me some time for me to think who Hunter Hughes was...and Which OSU program was being referred to. Drew was a decent quarterback. Rolovich and most of his coordinators were weak last year. We sucked. I hope the marshmallow man doesn't get zapped by the Ghost busters again this year.

Is the marshmallow man Brian Smith?

Nothing wrong with what he said.
