Saturday's Practice Notes (7/28)

Post by uhwarriors »

Lots of teaching going on especially with all the new receivers in camp. Andre Allen, Billy Ray Stutzman and Rolo were all working with the receivers.

The play of the day was Fr. WR James Green running a deep seam route, laying out and making a great diving catch.

Order of QBs was McDonald, Moussa, Cordeiro, Cassel and Uahinui.

McDonald threw a nice deep ball down to WR JoJo Ward, but still has the tendency to pull it down and run too quickly under pressure.

Moussa threw a couple of nice hole shots. He has a strong arm and can get it in there.

Cordeiro seems to be making the reads well and is throwing confidently.

Cassel seems to have an understanding of the offense having played at SMU under June Jones in knowing where to go with the ball.

Ward is as advertised and is fast and has good hands. He will play a lot if he can learn the system.

Meskell looked good with FGs making 4 out of 5 including a 45 yarder.

Mataafa and Keene are very quick and athletic DEs.

This is reading between the lines but it seems that McDonald could be another Makoa Camase-Stevens type threat with the ability to use his athleticism and also open the offense up for some trick plays for passing from the wide receiver position.

More reports from today's scrimmage that McDonald tucks and runs too often when pressure arrives. I just can't see how he's the answer long term. He's not fit for this system. Which isn't his fault, he was recruited for a different offense, but it is what it is.

Thanks for the insight J-Rod. It sounds like from uhwarriors point of view McDonald was the best QB of the day on 8/4. Does McDonald keep his eyes downfield when he's rolling out or does he just take off? Be nice to see a quarterback who uses their legs to buy more time but in college, a running QB can be a weapon. That's why I think if he lined up as wide receiver, he poses a threat to take an end around and pass or a lateral and pass. On the other hand, Colt had a tendency to run in his first year and JJ made him look downfield which caused him to make bad decisions when to cross the line of scrimmage.
