new stadium location
new stadium location
west oahu, current location, and manoa campus seem to be the three choices considered.lets kick this around.pros and cons.currently i am leaning towards west oahu.
Re: new stadium location
Imagine getting to open the season on a weekday afternoon with the game on primetime on ESPN, which would be around 4 or 5 PM like it was against USC and Colorado a few years ago...and imagine if that stadium was on the West Side. It'd look like how Aloha Stadium looks now
Re: new stadium location
we get about 20,000 now. i don't feel a stadium in west oahu would lose many of the hardcore fans.the west side location would add thousands.Neighbor wrote: ↑Mon Jul 23, 2018 6:15 pm Imagine getting to open the season on a weekday afternoon with the game on primetime on ESPN, which would be around 4 or 5 PM like it was against USC and Colorado a few years ago...and imagine if that stadium was on the West Side. It will be small.

Re: new stadium location
a remote outpost of a stadium west of the aloha stadium would only add to the negatives for students and facing the commute on a college saturday party night. as an aging townie i would not renew my season tickets and would greatly reduce the number of games i attend to one or two. the u.h. should poll current season ticket holders to see how much renewals would decline.
a smaller stadium at the current location would only make the attendance appear more generous than it is and ignores resolving the issue of the mostly empty student section. manoa students fail to show up even though their attendance is covered by their student athletic fees. even season ticket holders are letting go of their season tickets at the aloha stadium's location.
an on campus 40K stadium has the most potential as it would allow more students to participate and raise the college ambiance of the game. it would enhance the aging season ticket holders' renewals. it would also allow more tour companies to include the u.h. games as an optional activity. i saw groups of japanese tourists being escorted around the stadium during last season's games and an on campus stadium, closer to waikiki, would be a natural draw for a change in pace tour.
just curious: how many college stadiums are as remote from their campuses as the aloha stadium is to the manoa campus?

Re: new stadium location
35000 would be plenty in my opinion.27000 attendance would make this cozy stadium loud.if it sells out, there is always pay per view.i'm not a fan of multi purpose facilities.the fan usually loses out with poor sight lines do to the designing compromise.football only bowl.no bleachers of course.
Re: new stadium location
40,000 on campus is the best location but traffic would be a nightmare.students and tourists is not a reliable fan base source.hawaii football needs new and younger local families to add to the hardcore fan base.west oahu would provide that.st808 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 23, 2018 7:21 pm a remote outpost of a stadium west of the aloha stadium would only add to the negatives for students and facing the commute on a college saturday party night. as an aging townie i would not renew my season tickets and would greatly reduce the number of games i attend to one or two. the u.h. should poll current season ticket holders to see how much renewals would decline.

Re: new stadium location
West Oahu is hot. Too hot. Stadium is in a good location.
Pretty sure they will build a new one next to it and then blow it up.

Re: new stadium location
We should build two stadiums. One in present location and one in West Oahu. West Oahu would be the home of a Division 2 football program and a completely separate athletics program. Well, before you all laugh ... more sports is a good thing. Sure, it would cost a lot. But, it benefits our community. Hilo and Maui could have teams too. Three teams could play each other. And visiting teams could go two places on a trip. Yeh, I know... but the OP did open this up for different ideas.

West Oahu make sense because there is still land. However, that's a lot of driving, and would add more stress to traffic in more areas. Where as now, it's rather contain in a general area.
Does anyone know how long it takes to build a football stadium? I like to see Aloha Stadium be torn down and rebuild. Perhaps they can start construction at the parking lot. Build the new structure side by side the old.
Parking will be PITA, but at least maybe they can avoid lost use time. And then knock the old stadium down for parking lot. There is a tradition with Aloha stadium worth keeping. So much of past "Hawaii" history has been lost-changed.
I'm in favor of a "smaller" stadium. Not just for today, but I think it give a more intimate feeling. And if sold out, then demand is created, and maybe more season ticket holders. Or just got to buy tickets early.
Because Hawaii have lots of rich guys, I think the smaller stadium should step up the elite VIP section for those with cash to burn and enjoy watching games at first class.

This is the plan. Building the stadium in the lower lot. And then stick a bunch of retail where the stadium is.cabanalane wrote: ↑Tue Jul 24, 2018 6:06 am West Oahu make sense because there is still land. The problem with this is that we are no longer the Hawaii we remember. You can pretty much expect pre-packaged retail to be unboxed in the location. No mom and pop stores. Everything will be a figment of a well studied marketing model. Very limited opportunity for small business.
Re: new stadium location
Sam Boyd is pretty far from UNLV campus, but the new NFL stadium will be close by. Not sure if UNLV will play there on a regular basis or at all, though.
SDSU plays off-campus at the formerly called Qualcomm stadium.
there are probably other urban campuses that play off-campus.

Re: new stadium location
I’m for the current plan that was put forth last year. On campus Manoa stadium would be a logistic cluster f@%k and far from a sizeable portion of the fan base on the west side and West Oahu would be too far for a sizeable portion of the east side fan base and the Manoa student body living on campus. Current location has pretty much all the infrastructure in place in a mostly central location.

Re: new stadium location
I'm still not happy about the area look on campus. That used to be a nice open area and parking lot. When I was at UH, used to work out at the gym and then step out to open space. The (then new) area looks like they try to cram every inch into a tight spot.
