Re: Panoke Will Sign Tomorrow and Grayshirt

Post by BigWave96744 »

Panoke was on hand sitting near Faumui when he inked his paperwork.

“It’s just a relief. I’m starting a new chapter in my life,” Panoke said. “I kind of liked the ceremony. It’s only once in a lifetime.”

The pen he signed with went to his mother. So did the complimentary mini-calendar. Things get more serious from this point on. UH has high hopes for the state champions.

“It is what it is. It’s going to be fun being there with Chevan. They’re going back to the run and shoot. We already have a good idea of what we can run, our reads, everything like that,” Panoke said.

Panoke signed. Since info is that he will grayshirt, I think it was a scholarship agreement, not a NLI.

There’s ample competition at wideout with Jared Smart, Eric Rooks, John Johnson, Nick Mardner and Jonah Panoke. Panoke, a 2017 All-State receiver from Saint Louis, grayshirted in the fall. “I don’t know if (Panoke) will, but he can make an impact as a freshman,” Rolovich said.

Some explain this grayshirt thing. So he sat out one year? Ok, more like is signed on with UH, went to school, but his football career does not start until he is academically a So, but a Fr in football.

So then he can red short and have a 5 year career? So by his Jr. year, he could be done with college. And just focus on football? So he could be a 25 year old Sr, by design?

Or turn Pro? Or overall, just let his body be more mature? Or maybe Grad school while playing football?

He postponed enrollment and can still redshirt. Most use this to add weight, get stronger or recover from injury.

I see, good move then. Some local guys are still "small" coming out of HS.

As a grayshirt, Jonah would have sat out of school in the fall and entered UH in the spring as a freshman. When the season starts in the next fall he would still be a freshman academically, unless he jammed his courses into the spring and summer to qualify as a sophomore. Highly unlikely. Grayshirting also gives players a chance to acclimate to college and college life before facing the full impact of going to college and full on football.

From the pick, looks like he got good advisors (parents).

I thought grayshirting occurs when there are no more scholarships above the 25 but the player can play with the team and get a scholarship in January?

If you enroll in January 2019 instead of August 2018, you are a member of the 2019 recruiting class, even though you still started school in the 2018-2019 academic year. Eligibility clock starts in 2019, you can still redshirt, etc, and have the benefit of a full spring camp and college training facilities before your first season.
