Wyoming Cowboys did not like the Hawaiian paniolas winning their coveted prize in 1908.

"The paper indicated, however, that in the end the idea of Hawaiians winning did not sit well:
Here was something new -- the idea of a Hawaiian cowboy defeating a real cowboy at the cowboy's own particular game -- and the crowd made the most of the novelty. Their performance took the breath from the American cowboys, and [they] are demanding that the whites who are to rope today let slip no opportunity to beat the time of the Honolulu experts."
So remember the story of the underdog UH and remember history.

**1 I love underdog sports stories, so I read up about the paniolos in Cheyenne on Wyoming Tales and Trails. Mainland ropers were skeptical of the “brown kanakas” who rode in with colorful vaquero attire and flower leis. Cattlemen were stunned when Ikua Purdy took first place in the steer-roping contest with 56 seconds; Kaaua and Low also took top honors. The Cheyenne Daily Leader reported that “Their (paniolo) performance took the breath of the American cowboy.”
Tell 'em story Rolo.
