According to the channel 2 news, looks like his career is over. I was really looking forward to seeing him play. Hopefully he can recover from this and still have a productive life.

Re: Update on Kalepo Naotala

Initial reports began to surface throughout the weekend of Hawaii defensive tackle Kalepo Naotala who sustained injuries after diving off of the Waikiki Wall. Naotala was diving off of the wall on Saturday afternoon when he leaped head first hitting his head in the process. Early reports indicated that the Warrior was paralyzed after injuring his spine. Naotala underwent hours of surgery to repair his injured spine and is now recovering heading into the middle of the week. Naotala still has a ways to go before he is up and ready to go; however, his surgery was successful and he has regained motion in most of his upper extremities.

“Surgery went well. Kalepo can move his shoulders, right arm, and left shoulder so far. He can move his head and he can talk,” Coach Ray Savage, Jr. stated via text.

From today's SA article:
“Right now, Kalepo does not have use of his lower extremities, and partial use above the waist with his arms, just partial,” Byrd said. “There is no use lower in his legs. We want to make sure it’s worded that it’s ‘right now’ there’s no use.”

Byrd said the family is hopeful Naotala will show improvement at Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo. The 93-bed facility is known for its work and research in spinal injuries and neuro rehabilitation.

“He’s starting his second phase of rehabilitation,” Byrd said. “We’re excited about that. We’re excited about what the future holds for him. The family is encouraged.”
