Kevin Lempa, the University of Hawaii football team’s defensive coordinator, is a candidate for a non-coaching job on the University of Michigan football staff, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser has learned.
Lempa met with Michigan officials this past weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Out of all those guys, Ellerson and Norwood would interest me but I would rather have someone from the current staff. Perferably Coach Legi. He has the most experience.
Lempa's DC salary range at UH is $116,000 to 203,000. Supposedly he is looking at a non-coaching position at Michigan. The likely position is a Defensive Analyst helping Michigan DC Don Brown, his former DC at Boston College and Maryland and not the Director of Player Personnel (Tuioti's old position). One of the analyst at Michigan who left to coach at Oregon was being paid $150,000. BTW, Tuioti's salary at Michigan was $125,000.
If Lempa makes the move, it's probably more about less responsibilities, relationship with Brown and being closer to family than it is about money. He's 63 years old and has coached all around the country, including the San Diego Chargers. It's going to be about what makes him and his wife happy at this point of his career and their lives.
I think there's a good chance he stays at least another year or two. He likes Hawaii and he enjoys working with Rolovich. He has said he never laughed so much as he has working with Rolo. The defense now has a little more talent and depth and I hope he stays so we can see him defense develop it over the next several years.
Good time to go to Michigan when the weather is almost at its worst. At about 63, you're kind of trying to figure out where you'd want to retire. I'd pick Hawaii over Michigan.

good point. there's a reason a lot of retired people move to florida, arizona etc... the warmer climate is better for old bones.
