Salavea was instrumental in getting the Samoa pipeline flowing to Pullman.

Salave’a has become one of college football’s most significant recruiters; his connection to the Polynesian community is such that the Cougars’ rise to Pac-12 contention can be linked to those Salave’a recruited, including Hercules Mata’afa, Daniel Ekuale Logan Tago, Darryl Paulo, Shalom Luani and Destiny Vaeao

But 2016 was a hard year on Salave’a and his wife, Josie. Four of the players he recruited from American Samoa, and took into his home frequently, were arrested for various crimes over the summer prior to the 2016 football season.

The controversy broiled for much of the season. Barber was expelled and then reinstated. Logan Tago was suspended, but his case is now under review. Head coach Mike Leach and other members of the WSU staff felt that football players were being targeted by the Pullman police, making it harder to sell Salave’a’s vision of Pullman as a safe place for American Samoan football players to study and play the game.

Josie Salave’a spoke on Barber’s behalf at a board of regents meeting, saying the controversies had been particularly hard on the Salave’as and the Polynesian community.

Could mistreatment of Polynesians deter players to go or stay at Pullman lead the way for former Hawaii Recruits to finish their career at Hawaii?

DT Daniel Ekuale, graduates and would 1 to play 1

LB Logan Tago, Soph would have 3 to play 2
Suspension lifted, coach Leach supported Tago saying he was mistreated by authorities

OLine Frederick Mauigoa would have 4 to play 3

DE Hercules Mataafa

Salavea's departure to Oregon apparently had no effect on Kailua HS All-State DE Christian Mejia from committing to Wazzu.
