Makin’ it outta Compton

By Stephen Tsai

Excerpt from the above link:

This training camp, he is focusing on run-blocking, a skill he hones going against Naeole in post-practice drills.

“Naeole doesn’t need pads,” Allen said. “He’ll try to drive us off the ball. I have to drive him. He’s a great coach. If you work hard enough, he’ll respect you with everything he has.”

dejon allen is an example of sports being an incentive for applying yourself at schoolwork. if it weren't for organized sports in high school, allen would have been lost to the streets of compton.

when detractors advocate doing away with sports at the university of hawaii, they ignore the fact that many players would not have a chance of attaining a college degree if it weren't for the sports programs at the university or college level.

most scholar athletes will not advance into the professional level of play in their sport. yet, they will spend a lifetime of service and contribution to the communities they settle within.

they will enjoy a lifetime enhanced by a college degree they would never have been able to afford. or as in allen's case, would never have aspired to achieve without sports.

congratulations to allen and all scholar athletes who play for the university of hawaii.

Well said....I grew up with a handful of guys who made it out of terrible family/living situations bc of football. All have a college degree and a few made it to the NFL. Without sports, my friends and their families would likely be stuck in Palolo and Kalihi going no where.

+ I always advocate that for every kid offered a scholarship from these $hitty neighborhoods, schools should offer an academically talented student.
Be humble and confident in yourself and all things you do. :zook:
