I don't have a grudge.
I can say the same thing about ANY coach before JJ and after JJ about how a coach is or how the players feel about him so your point is without substance.
JJ was perfect in 1999...but that time has come and gone...just like JJ did...hes not the answer.
LET's MOVE ON!
Move on to who? What is the answer? No one knows. People want someone who can fix a losing program. You can pick any name out of a hat and say that guy is the savior, but you don't know if he will end up being the answer to the programs problems. My point is UH needs someone who can turn the ship around quickly. JJ has done that twice at two different programs. He is a proven coach and program fixer. He may not be your answer, but he is the best answer at the moment.
Most put the blame on Frazier for JJ leaving; but, it was always the bottom line-SMU had a deeper pocket than UH. Then when the ship (SMU) started to list, JJ was the first one to jump ship.
Bottom line, no matter who becomes the next AD, he/she will be facing the same problems.
1) Rental to Aloha Stadium
2) No share from concessions at Aloha Stadium
3) No share from parking at Aloha Stadium
4) Pays the Stadium Authority for clean up after every game.
5) No help from the State Legislature to cover Title IX expenses.
6) No help from the Tourism Authority, even with proven studies that UH Athletics add $ to the General Fund…LOL…The Tourism Authority pays the NFL to have the PRO bowl in Hawaii.
7) And 2,500 miles from the Pacific Coast; which impacts travel, recruiting, etc.
UH have six revenue producing programs: Football, baseball, men and women’s basketball, men and women’s volleyball. Football and women’s volleyball is the only two programs that are self-sufficient. Football, even with lean years, still is profitable and help pays for a few non-revenue producing programs. The Wahine adds a few thousand $ profit/fiscally, but not enough to cover expenses for one non-revenue program.
In the real business world, where the bottom line is the only thing that matters, all those non-revenue programs would be downsized…lol…and become intramural sports.
But, Title IX is a Law. Drop non-revenue women’s programs and UH will cease to receive federal monies.
IMHO UH will need a savvy combo politician/businessman for the next AD.
But…all the above is moot, if every game is sold out at the Aloha Stadium, the Stan Sheriff Center, and the Les Murakami Stadium.
I’m dreaming…’cause not enough fans will catch a plane from the outer island, no black-out TV for Oahu, more UH fans sitting on the fence versus die-hard fans that go to the game even during lean years.
