After weeks and months of speculation about the future of the UAB football program, it appears the program has seen its final days. USA Today is reporting the program will be shut down as early as this week.

As you see the rich getting richer while the poor getting poorer, this will be more common. Unforunately UH is not among he rich.

This link just reminded me of this. http://collegead.org/college-ad-scoop/
Players will be paid next year. Forget Chow for a second. Can UH pay players more than other powerhouse programs? If UH is already in the red, and college players can make more money playing for another school, there is really "no hope" for UH.
It's come down to, why would players come here? Why would they play for minimum wage? Without knowing the details, we can guess UH will be on the low end on player stipend.

Ben Jay pretty much said the same thing in his latest news interview.cabanalane wrote:This link just reminded me of this. http://collegead.org/college-ad-scoop/

Of course, most know - we're handcuffed by our isolation. Travel costs bankrupt the AD.
UH's woes grow from there, including a fair-weathered fan-base. Notre Dame's stadium is PACKED, even in their most leanest of years.
Our grandson turns 5 on Valentine's Day of next year. He hasn't missed a UH game since he was born.

Re: May UH never come to this
We should be grateful that Hawaii has a fair-weather fan base. That's what has help keep the program alive all these years. But unless the game is entertaining, they will spend their money elsewhere. Without them coming and going, UH's administration would do little to nothing to try and please its fan base.

Link didn't work; think you have an extra "y" at the end. This works: http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.co ... l-program/BigWave96744 wrote:Sad days at UABhttp://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.co ... -program/yReport: UAB shutting down football program

Also, here's a follow-up article on the people fighting to keep the UAB football program afloat: http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.co ... -football/

Re: May UH never come to this
Probably going to see more like this in the coming couple of years as the poorer athletic programs are unable to cope with the rapidly increasing expenses. Sad day for football fans. Happy day for academics who hate college sports.

No way can a kid can pick the schools that pay the most. First of all you're recruited to play and get a free education. Second a school like Alabama cannot have 2000 players on football scholarships so if a kid can't get into Alabama for the big bucks then what? Quit?

Yes, they can, if they are recruited by multiple schools. Yes, he will look at the football factors, but if the decision comes down to two (similar), he could choose the one that "pays" him the most. If you are talking about a ghetto kid, that extra cash will be nice. If Stanford can pay more, why would he come to Hawaii? That amount could be set by the conference (don't know). But either case, the richer schools (conference?) can "pay" more than the other schools.
They will still have the same number of players, except they will be paid. Call it what we wish, a stipend or not. Bottom line is getting paid.
The stipend $ is on top of scholarship and room & board.

Re: May UH never come to this
There are too many colleges in Alabama to compete for money and fans. In Hawaii UH football IS the only team period.
According to this web site http://prwolfe.bol.ucla.edu/cfootball/LinksList.html Alabama has 18. Count them 18 college football teams vying for fans and money.
Again. How many does Hawaii have?
Arkansas has 11 college football teams.
Why can't Hawaii handle just one freaking football team?

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Professor of Economics and noted sports economics expert Andrew Zimbalist paints a picture of the current financial landscape in collegiate athletics. It's not rosy.
"It's perilous for schools that are not in the top 20 or 30 programs. There are maybe 20 programs across the country that run either in surplus or breaking even on an operating basis".
UH Manoa is not one of them. The program has run a deficit 11 of the past 13 years. Athletics Director Ben Jay raised eyebrows in August by suggesting UH may have to drop the football program to remain viable. He walked the comments back then, but in November said he's anticipating a budget shortfall of 3.5 million dollars for the fiscal year.
Those figures are similar to the University of Alabama-Birmingham, which announced on Tuesday it is dropping football. The school projected a net deficit of 25 million dollars over the next 5 years with football. Without it, the projection yielded a revenue of 2 million dollars.
Ending the program is enticing for any cash strapped athletic department.
"Everything has got to be on the table, including that. And we've got to look at it reasonably, rationally, and economically" said State Senator Sam Slom. Slom says it may be a tough decision - but the model that UAB created may be one UH needs to explore. "It's more than just the money itself. They were looking at the university going ahead for the next 20, 30, 40 years. I think that's what we have to do in our community".

Can't house their own criminals (they're nearly an "export" for the State of Hawaii).
Closes entire roadways for hours to "investigate" a serious or fatal traffic accident. I'm talking about all freeway lanes in a given-direction that close for an-average of 4 hrs if there's a serious or fatal accident.
Has a homeless problem that rivals any metropolitan.
Allows for medical-marijuana, but no legal way for patients to get it.
Introduces studies to study the study.
The mofos in charge, can't do anything the easy way, everything must be a challenge.
