Ugly win is better than a moral victory
Last nights game wasn't the prettiest, but a win is a win and we are 1-2, about where 90something % of people thought we would be after 3 games. I like our chances of winning at Colorado and the following week would be a much needed bye week to get some of the injured back.

I feel good for the players that they finally got to tuck a win under their belts. That said, Chow's offensive approach was really offensive (ugly, boring, stodgy, extremely predictable, non-inspiring).

Re: Ugly win is better than a moral victory
He has no confidence in his quarterbacks so that is all we have for now. Hopefully someone will step up. Our receivers need to be more consistent. Way too many dropped balls.My3Cats wrote:I feel good for the players that they finally got to tuck a win under their belts. Re: Ugly win is better than a moral victory
Few reactions and opinions from watching the game yesterday.
1. Steven Lakalaka is no Joey Iosefa.
As simple as it might be, for some reason i got the feeling that Chow felt he could give Lakalaka the same amount of carries and through the same plays as he would Iosefa, while getting somewhere near the same results. That was incorrect, we saw Lakalaka get bottled up in the backfield and unable to get back to the line a few times. They need to keep it as a running back by committee and try to work in more quick hitting off tackle runs.
2. The offensive line needs to improve.
I feel the offensive line is not as bad as people might say. But watching the playcalling, it seems like Chow and his staff are trying to help a struggling offensive line. Most passing plays i saw were roll outs or designed plays to get the QB out of the pocket. I do think the line needs help in the running game, but the pass protection seemed good enough to give the QB a straight drop back.
3. Higgins vs. Woolsey
Higgins is more of a drop back passer that you are used to see come out from Norm Chow coached teams. Woolsey does much more roll outs so depends on who you ask. I like both qb's but i feel like the play calling for Woolsey was not the same as Higgins. If you simplify the playbook a little for Woolsey, i think he'd have more success.
4. Lack of speed and athleticism on the edge.
Our receiving corps is lackluster. I dont see a single player i feel was capable of taking the top off of that FCS defense. There were a few opportunities but no game changers out on the edge. We have good size, but no speed.
5. Taz Stevenson should be the defensive MVP.
Taz Stevenson has been impressive at the safety spot. glad hes home and playing for the hometown team.

QB play is really holding this team back. Could be so much better than this, but yes a win is a win. Time to beat Boulder and get this ship moving in the right direction.
Re: Ugly win is better than a moral victory
I like how Demo isn't afraid to use starters on special teams. It was really something seeing our defensive tackles on punt team.

I like the oline when they put Dejon at right guard and put Lloyd at left.

In the end, a win is a win. UNI's big player (Johnson) was kept out of the endzone, that has to count for something. And now the next game is again Colorado, which is a very winnable game. Onward!
Re: Ugly win is better than a moral victory
thought it was a good game against a good team that allowed the warriors to experiment with lineups and concentrate on getting the fundamentals right.
passing game: didn't click as often and as deep as it should have, opposing teams will see deep threats on game tapes and have to deal with them.
running game: iosefa is tough to replace. lakalaka can run, but needs relief.
defense: aggressive. kept the game from getting away. scored. kept their runner grounded and hounded on passes.
special teams: keelan can run; harding amazing kicking the ball inside the 20, and getting the ball to hit another opposing player.
no sense going deep into the playbook on this game tape. just keep it simple, keep it basic. win the game. anyway you can.
slump-busters are never pretty.
still, it's one for the win column.

I agree with this. I had this feeling about Woolsey but never said it. Woolsey may be a better athlete, but I'm not sure he is a better QB. I felt Chow went with Woolsey because he is "local," or parents were local. It's "easier" for him to lead a team with many Polynesians.dirtylickens wrote:3. Higgins vs. Woolsey

Colt B was a different breed of mainland QB. I'm not sure how the stable of mainland QB will do to command the respect of a Hawaii team.
Chow run the ball too much. Maybe that's all he's got. And how Joey is out, we are perhaps seeing a different direction. Perhaps a hope for more passing.

They still ran too many times. They got to spend more time practicing the pass plays. They get enough run play repetition every game.cabanalane wrote:I agree with this.
