2014 Season: How Many Wins?

Post by J-Rod »

It's finally June....season is nearing. Lets get this on record, how many wins do you predict the 2014 Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors record? Please note when you vote, Hawai'i has 13 regular season games this fall. The schedule is below....

Random notes...

-First time ever UH ends the regular season on the road.
-As of the date of this post, no weekday games. All Saturday's.
-UH will play 3-Pac-12 games in the first month of the season.
-UH will play Rice for the first time since 2004. UH is 1-2 all-time @Rice.
-In the 2014 Wyokie Bowl, Wyoming returns to Oahu for the first time since 1997. UH lost 35-6 in that game.
-In the Hawaii-Fresno State rivalry, since 1992 neither team has won 4-consecutive games. Will that change this fall?

I try to stay as objective as possible....so I'm going with 5 wins. Here's my explanation...

1-11 is a horrible record on paper. If you told me after the Sugar Bowl that within 5 years UH would lose 11 games in a season, I would have thought you spent too much time enjoying New Orleans. Last season sucked. But as someone who watched every second of last season, you have to admit that this team lost a lot of close games. Up to 7 lost games were winnable (Fresno (3), San Jose (10), UNLV (2), Colorado State (7), Navy (14), San Diego State (7), Wyoming (3))...rarely in college football do you see such a discrepancy. Sometimes the ball roles your way, something it doesn't. Last season it rolled against UH much more than normal...football God's were out to get this team.

Looking to this season, I see a lot of mixed results. The 2013 team got rocked by a bowl-less Nevada team, but nearly beat Fresno. The only consistent was inconsistency. I expect similar results this fall, except I think the ball rolls UH's way a few more times than it did in 2013 and I'll add a little optimism too. I think UH narrowly beats Northern Iowa (trap game), beats Wyoming by a TD or two...Pokes lose quite a few special players...I think the team gets Nevada at home this time around...and I'm going to call one upset. Last season UH put up admirable fights against USC, Oregon State, and Fresno. You give Sean Schroeder one more minute, UH beats Fresno. Bottom line. I think the MW upset of the year will be UH shocking Utah State at home. The Aggies brief success started with a huge win @Hawaii, and it will end where it started. Finally, I think UH closes out the home schedule with a beat down over UNLV.

That's my preseason prediction...UH beats Northern Iowa, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah State, UNLV. Road woes continue....but progress is made.

Well...Hawaii has better talent than Wyoming does plus the game is in Hawaii.

I honestly think 4-9 will happen for UH and it'll be an improvement.

To me it depends on 3 factors

1. how fast our defense adapts to the new schemes.
2. how our qb situation plays out
3. If Joey iosefa can stay healthy or can St juste/Lakalaka/wily ease the load for iosefa

If 2 out of those 3 happen i can honestly see at least 5-6 wins
but if only 1 of those things happen it'll be another tough season.

Beating Northern Iowa, Wyoming and UNLV at home is not an improvement. Those should be gimmes. Beating a BCS team and winning on the road would be improvements. To me, going ten steps back and 5 steps forward still does not make for an "improvement". What brought Chow into the fold was supposed to be steps taken to "improve" the program.

I'm not sure I blame Chow, solely, though. I think the admins who cut the coaching budget also are to blame. You get what you pay for and to pull this program out of the muck and mire it's in today, it might now cost them dearly. Not to mention the losses already incurred.

I am picking 4 wins for sure and a strong possibility of 5.

My wins are Northern Iowa, Wyoming, UNLV and either Nevada or Utah State which would give us 4-5 wins.

It is possible that we could beat Rice, Nevada, Utah State for 4-6 wins.

I am hopeful that we can catch Washington and Oregon State early.......both have new QBs and we get them at home and we can win one of them. 4-7 wins.

didn't list anything on the poll because my prediction is 5 - 9 wins:

Whys: Joey, oline is more mature and better, talent at WRs, cool aid drinking faith in TG's come back. I know the D is a huge question mark, but we have some good bodies there and I would say after maybe the 3rd game they'll really come on. I think we take one of the PAC-12s this time, Oregon State, althought its possible we hang with Washington. My guaranteed 5 wins are Northern Iowa, Wyoming, Nevada, UT State, UNLV. The give or takes that may get us to 6 - 9: we're strong at home the team is hungry, we take Oregon St this time, I think we can win one out of the Colorado/Rice road games. Mostly because of an improved oline and run game which is really what sets up Chow's game, I think we've got pretty good chances vs Colorado State, SJS...

If TG tanks, forget everything I've said above. My prediction is based only on his return, as much as I respect Woolsey and Higgins, I don't think they'll do the job...and we haven't seen Reilly yet, so...
