UH wants to construct own football stadium
Re: UH wants to construct own football stadium
If they do they should design it with low maintenance cost in mind

A campus stadium would fill easier with students being in such close proximity and really bring the college experience. IMO 40,000 would be better. 30,000 is just a bit over the bare minimum for a div I school I think.
Rail might be the reason the state may fund it since the pillars are being built so close to it. They probably want the land to build something to complement the rail, condos, stores, etc. everyone knows the city doesn't plan anything thoroughly because they have the taxpayers to fund their endless incompetence .....eg the route and plan changes they had to do because it was too close to the airport fiasco......even though it should of been caught before the route was approved. something to the tune of a million dollars just for the engineers just to look at it again not even do any changes to it. lol. Wouldn't be a surprise if UH is being setup as the patsy.

IT'S JUST A GAME!

I'm excited about the possibility of a new stadium, however, I think we may be under-achieving with 30,000 seats. UH should aim high and go 40,000 to 50,000 seats.

Funding?
Legalize pot. Colorado projecting a tax-windfall of $24-million this year alone.

To me, 40,000 max would be good. But they should make it so it can be increased in size.MauiGuy wrote:I'm excited about the possibility of a new stadium, however, I think we may be under-achieving with 30,000 seats. UH should aim high and go 40,000 to 50,000 seats.

+1 My thoughts exactly, 30,000 to small, 40,000 is about right, and make it so the stadium can be expanded in the future if need be.Irse wrote:To me, 40,000 max would be good. Re: UH wants to construct own football stadium
Are there any thoughts about what the state will do with Aloha Stadium if UH builds a new stadium? Without football, really, is there a need?
I think it is time for a new stadium, but not two. Both will suffer financially. UH is paying rent for Aloha Stadium, but isn't that like moving money from one pocket to another?
BTW, can someone inform me how Blasdell have been doing since UH built it's own arena?
Like a hotel, wouldn't 90% occupancy be better than 60% occupancy, even if break even is at 50%.
Hawaii is a small state and land is a premium. Let's not waste it with two stadiums.

I don't believe UH pays rent anymore Just operating costs.cabanalane wrote:Are there any thoughts about what the state will do with Aloha Stadium if UH builds a new stadium? Without football, really, is there a need?

30K-35K is about right. We've never consistently had 40K+ for a 3-5 year span....only in winning spurts. Start at 35K or so and make the fan base prove it can sell-out consistently.....then expand.
Re: UH wants to construct own football stadium
I like the idea of a new stadium. But I would prefer our leaders come up with a grand plan to to construct something on site in which UH is a partner in. Maybe there is a way to bring some 20k temporary seats to a high school site or Maui or whatever while we wait the reconstruction on site

that, or some form of legalized gambling. casinos on the west side or offshore. there are other revenue streams out there... we just aren't desperate enough, yet.Haynr8dr wrote:Funding?

Re: UH wants to construct own football stadium
I believe the state needs US permission in order to change its use, and I think that there have been ideas that yes, it's in such a prime location that it does need to be redeveloped. So if UH leaves, they might ask the feds to change it to some other use altogether.

Re: UH wants to construct own football stadium
This is probably the right take. The sports business is changing and attendance is important but it's the tip of the revenue iceberg. Plus with UH having its own stadium, the corporate boxes can be built in and the whole thing can be designed as a modern facility.
Another thing that was mentioned in the news was that there are only dorms for less than 4000 students on campus. What? I was wondering why everyone commutes or rents in Moilili. If UH wants a loyal alumni fanbase that contributes regularly to the school, one important plus is having a core of happy 4-year on campus grads. With about 14,000 undergrads, there aren't even dorms for all the freshmen.
Personally I think UH should at least double the on-campus housing, and when all is built, require all frosh to live on campus. This would (i) free up housing in Moiliili, (ii) reduce traffic, (iii) help create a class spirit (which can help with future alumni donations and perhaps help with the 4-year grad rate) and (iv) increase the pool of potential athletics fans.

Re: UH wants to construct own football stadium
Dorms are moneymaking endeavors in more ways than one, are they not? I doubt seriously if UH could justify corporate boxes though. Really? Who's gonna pay for them...Hinode Rice...Budweiser? I mean...really.dcwarrior wrote:This is probably the right take. The sports business is changing and attendance is important but it's the tip of the revenue iceberg. Dorms were one of many issues back when I went to school at Manoa. It does kinda echo back to the Brennan/Jones' complaint about lack of soap in the showahs.
