The San Jose Mercury News reported on Sunday that backup California quarterback Zach Kline has decided to transfer.

“I just think from what the coaches have told me, I have a better opportunity somewhere else,” Kline told the paper. “They put it to me straight and in a professional way, which I appreciate.”

Kline was a highly-recruited prospect who signed with Cal in 2012 and redshirted during then-head-coach Jeff Tedford’s final season

Wednesday afternoon, Baker Mayfield was named as the Big 12′s Offensive Freshman of the Year. A few hours, it was learned that the quarterback would be packing up his hardware and taking it to another campus to continue his collegiate playing career.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said on Tuesday that Irish quarterback Andrew Hendrix has asked for a release from his scholarship.

No word yet on where Hendrix might end up, but since he has already graduated from Notre Dame, he’ll be able to play immediately under the graduate transfer rule.
