Post by Scott »

Sorry for the change, but Jim Donovan will be chatting live from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Monday, March 14th (WAC Basketball Tournament). If you can't be here then, please post your questions in this thread. One question at a time. Preference will be given to live questions but we should be able to have all questions answered.

Mr. Donovan,

Thanks again for taking the time to answer our questions.

My Question: We are just about to enter rumor season when it comes to conference expansion. Do you think the MWC will be adding any new members this summer? Are there plans to add new members in the future? Or is 10 good? Thanks again!

Mr. Donovan,

To add to J-Rod question about possible expansion rumors, did you think the MWC will add a school for all sports except football to keep an even number of schools for all sports?

The Big West Conference holds an annual Mascot Mayhem Pentathlon. Will this finally set the wheels in motion for us to have an official mascot?

Jim,

What kind of attendence do we need to at least break even on Tuesday's basketball game? Is there a chance to host the second round too, if we advance?

Hi Jim,
You've played under Dick Tomey and served as a GA under him after your playing days were over.
Now that he's back at Manoa, what is something that you learned from coach Tomey that has helped you get to where you are today?

Hi Jim.

Any updates on ticket sales for the CIT tournament? I read that you will determine if the game will be televised or not on Monday pending ticket sales. Also, do UH keep the gate receipts for the game against Portland tomorrow night?

Thanks

Apologies if this question has already been asked, how much will moving to the MWC affect our current out of conference schedule? Will you have to shuffle games around to accommodate the MWC regular season schedule? Or will they work around it? Did the move to the MWC help us in our OOC schedule for our future games?

Aloha Mr. Donovan...
Last football season, there was a lot of empty parking stall in the inner ring, although the lot was deemed full. At a few of those games I had to go to my car at halftime and noticed the inner ring still empty.

Could you share what percentage were sold and if anything will be done different to ensure UH still reaps from the prepaid parking passes while also getting more cars in the stadium parking.

Mahalo for your time

The best way to answer a hypothetical question, which I've been trained not to do in general, is to look at the past decisions by the Mountain West Conference. Less than 8 weeks ago, the Presidents of the MWC decided to stay at 9 full members and Hawaii as a football only member. I don't see, at this time, any factors that would change this recent decision by the MWC Presidents.

Ultimately, it's the Presidents of the conference that make decisions like this. Of course, outside factors such as other conferences adding members can be a trigger for MWC expansion. At this point, that's the best perspective I can provide.

See previous answer. A decision to expand would be totally decided by MWC Presidents.

No.

I have discussed this issue with Chancellor Hinshaw, and I believe she was going to discuss it with the School of Hawaiian Knowledge to get their feedback on how we might create/develop a mascot that would be culturally acceptable. There is no set timeline for this issue.

Our best estimate at this point is we need about 3,500 tickets sold to break even. Yes, we've been told to be prepared to host if we're fortunate enough to prevail over Portland on Tuesday evening. We're not guaranteed, but we've been told to be prepared.
