FUTURE IS BRIGHT

There was a handful of talented underclassmen at the camp, headlined by Orange Lutheran (Calif.) offensive lineman John Lopez, Long Beach Poly (Calif.) defensive back David Price, Cathedral (Los Angeles, Calif.) quarterback Hayden Rettig and Vista Murrieta (Calif.) defensive back Su'a Cravens.

Cravens plays linebacker at the high school level but could end up at safety or will 'backer depending on how much weight he puts on his 6-foot, 202 pound frame. He worked out with the linebackers and was easily among the most explosive and athletic players at the position.
http://rise.espn.go.com/football/articl ... t=Football
Here’s a look at seven players who likely will be national prospects and recruited at the high major level next fall.

Su’a Cravens (’13), LB, 6-0.5, 202, Vista Murrieta (Murrieta, Calif.)
Cravens is a quick, athletic ‘backer with a very bright future. He already has offers rom half the Pac 10 and will be among the top prospects in the region in two years. He has the athleticism to move to safety in college but will likely be able to grow in to a prototype weak side ‘backer and make plays all over the field.

LB – 2013 prospect Su’a Cravens from Vista Murrieta worked out at linebacker but many see him as a safety, it depends on how his frame grows. He showed enough to keep watching him for next year.
http://www.wearesc.com/news/story.php?article=4232
DEFENSIVE BACKS

The underclassmen defensive backs are quite impressive as well. Sophomore safeties Su’a Cravens (Murrieta, CA/Vista Murrieta) and David Price (Long Beach, CA/Poly) could be two of the top prospects in the state next season, and freshmen cornerbacks Jalen Brown (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe) and Malik Cyphers (Harbor City, CA/Narbonne) are two names to keep in mind for the future as well.

FIRST TEAM SOPHOMORES (Defense)

DL – R.J. Coleman (Mira Costa, Manhattan Beach) 6-3, 260
DL – Griffith Gates (Foothill, Pleasanton) 6-3, 215
DL – Jack Powers (Palma, Salinas) 6-5, 215
DL—Vita Vea (Milpitas) 6-4, 260
LB – Dimone Backus (West Valley, Hemet) 6-0, 210
LB – Michael Hutchings (De La Salle, Concord) 6-1, 185
LB – Shaunne Katoa (Monterey) 6-2, 200
DB – Su’a Cravens (Vista Murrieta, Murrieta) 6-1, 200
DB – Dashon Hunt (Westlake, Westlake Village) 5-8, 160
DB – David Price (Long Beach Poly, Long Beach) 6-0, 180
DB – Max Redfield (Mission Viejo) 6-2, 180

ERIC SONDHEIMER / ON HIGH SCHOOLS
Early commitments only add to recruiting problems
More players are making "soft verbals" to schools, only to eventually change their minds when the time comes to make an actual decision.

By Eric Sondheimer
April 17, 2011

"These early commitments are a bunch of baloney," Long Beach Poly football Coach Raul Lara said.

Thank you, Coach Lara, for saying what needs to be said. How a 17-year-old is supposed to finalize his college choice without taking an official visit, without examining all the academic and athletic consequences and without meeting the people he's going to be around for four and five years, such as teachers, administrators, coaches and fellow students, is ridiculous.

And yet, it keeps happening, these early commitments, only to see the teenager change his mind, which comes as no surprise.

Two weeks ago, four Long Beach Poly football players committed to Arizona State, three of them receivers. That's 10 months before they can even sign a letter of intent. How did it happen?

In the case of receiver Richard Smith, he said he was wooed after attending a junior day at Arizona State.

"I got so excited and rushed and committed," he said.

But on Saturday, Smith said, "I'm still going to keep my options open."

In other words, let recruiters keep coming with offers. Arizona State might be his leader, but Smith isn't yet a Sun Devil, so forgive me if I haven't written a story about four Poly players committing to Arizona State. They have their entire senior season to come, not to mention a summer of constant recruiting, and if they continue to develop, other schools are going to make their recruiting pitch. Call me skeptical for not believing they're all going to end up in Tempe.

Safety/linebacker Eddie Lackey said the Warriors are his leading choice for 2012.

Lackey played at Northwood University in Michigan in 2010. He then decided to transfer to Riverside (Community) College, where he will play this season. He will be eligible to move to a Division I school after he accumulates 48 transferrable credits.

Lackey is friends with UH defensive back John Hardy-Tuliau. Both are 2010 Vista Murietta High graduates.

Lackey back on big-time track

Former Vista Murrieta safety Eddie Lackey, right, has been offered a scholarship by Hawaii. Lackey played his freshman season last year at Northwood University (Mich.) and will play his sophomore season at Riverside Community College.

| Posted: Monday, July 4, 2011 |

A sophomore bounce-back entering his first season at Riverside Community College, Lackey picked up that first elusive offer ---- from Hawaii ---- late last month, completing a chapter that Lackey's coaches believe should have been written a year sooner..

At some point, he'll schedule his visit to Hawaii, where former Broncos teammate John Hardy now plays. Until then, he'll savor it all while letting the rest of the season ---- recruiting included ---- play out.

darn, according to this article, it looks like Baldwin DE Pasoni Tasini really wants to go to BYU. also, he plans to take a mormon mission before starting college.

http://byu.scout.com/2/1084744.html
"Utah, [Hawaii] and UNLV have all offered," Tasini said. "It was exciting and Utah was the first to offer. Coach Chad [Kauha'aha'a] came down and talked with me and that's when he offered. Oregon and Washington and [Arizona] are also recruiting me. I think that's about it off the top of my head."

Despite having three current offers in hand, there is one that Tasini really wants, and he wants it really bad. In fact, he won't make a final decision on where he wants to play college football until the end of his senior season in hopes he can earn a BYU scholarship.

"Yeah, I want that BYU offer," Tasini said. "I want it just as bad as I've wanted any offer. I'm really looking forward to it, but I have to wait and see now. I'm not going to make my decision until after my senior season is done with."

per Chris Fetters, 2013 recruit Su'a Cravens may take an unofficial visit to UW with Vista Murieta teammate and 2012 UW commit Jeremy Castro. with virtually the entire pac-12 offering Cravens, he seems like a long shot.

So given that Tsai reported that Sua Cravens will be taking an unofficial visit here is that actually better or worse for us? As that means he'll be here on his own nickle - though that could coincide with an already planned family trip to see his brother and sister.

i would say, good sign. hes still a junior so i dont think he can take any official visits yet. i just hope he will save one of his 5 official visits for UH.

Good point. Hopefully, he can make it out to the UNLV to watch his brother play as that's the closest game to his home.

so far for 2012 we have verbals from:

OL Dustin Adams
LB Eddie Lackey (JC 3/2)

also "greyshirts"

SB Scott Harding (will have to count as 2011 initial since he is enrolled for fall)
OL Ben Clarke (mentioned on Tsai's blog a few weeks ago)
WR Ellis Henderson (signed scholarship agreement, confirmed by Tsai and his local paper in WA)
LB Penitito Faalologo (per Tsai, greyshirting bc death in family)
LB Lancelot "Keke" Williams (greyshirt per advertiser article on Farrington)
DE David Katina (part of 2010 recruiting class, but rumored to join in spring 2012)
LB Tyler Gray (dont know status, have not heard anything since LOI day)
QB Justin Alo (dont know status, per Tsai, still need to qualify)

DL Junior Alexis - apparently on the roster of Miami U.

lots of greyshirts.

Tsai said that Alo still hadn't met the requirements for admission to UH. Not sure what that means exactly, but at this point I think that implies they probably aren't counting on him getting in at this point.
