Yes that's asphalt roads you see...
I think when you last visited Hawaii (in the 90's) Waikiki was the only roads that were paved.
Not much has changed and Waikiki still is the only paved roads on islands.
You are a very sharp guy...

I was last there in March of 1989 just a few months before UH went 9-3-1 and lost to McChicken State 33-13 in the Aloha Bowl, not in the 1990s.

I only lived in the 80's for a month and a half. According to my parents I'm very fortunate that was all.
