Bumping this thread from 2008 and changing the request to new DC.

I know Jeff's mother in law would love to have her grand kids around on island. He is set financially with the NFL after playing for 10 seasons.

Have you checked how much money he's set to make next year? $760,000. So what if he's financially set. Why would he want to work for 100K when he can make 7x the amount. As a DC, with recruiting, he'll probably be away form his family more often recruiting. Why would he want to do that?

We're kinda reaching a bit now, aren't we? UH pays peanuts and scraps. Someone would really want to work only for peanuts and scraps to be here, or to gain experience before moving up. Or to want to live in paradise in the in-laws garage because no can afford a house of their own. In Ulbrich's case, if he is financially secure, it would only be so that his kids' can be with grandma? Hmmmmmmm

Because he could bring his family back to Hawaii, where family lives and provide opportunities for his kids to spend time with Grandparents, and live in Hawaii again. That is a powerful motivator. If you are financially independent, earning more money isn't the driving factor, quality of life is.

And I don't agree that recruiting with take him away from his family more often. With the exception of recruiting and home visits, Coaches also use phones and social media and will offer official visits to Hawaii.

We should hire a DC that has had proven success, knows defense and can also motivate student athletes to reach their potential. Being a former Warrior that was successful in the NFL is a bonus that can only help recruiting efforts. Jeff Ulbrich is someone that could fill that DC position well.

Former NFL player, Jackie Slater is coaching the Oline at Azuza Pacific, under head coach and former Rainbow Victor Santa Cruz.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest offensive linemen in NFL history with a 20-year professional career and induction to the NFL Hall of Fame, Azusa Pacific offensive line coach Jackie Slater is one of the nation’s finest teachers of the craft he mastered for two decades in the NFL for the Los Angeles and St. Louis Rams franchise, which retired his jersey number.

What other jobs did Naeole, Miano and Gouveia turn down to stay at UH? Any that would have made them 7x more than what they made at UH?

For some people but not necessarily for everyone who ever lived here.

Would like to see him come back but seriously doubt he would even consider it.

I would give Gary Anderson a call and see if he would be interested in a one year deal. Have him work with current staff and help Rolo on the defensive side of the ball. Who knows maybe he might stay a couple of years.

Now this idea wouldn't hurt!

Gary Anderson is a great coach but with no ties and connections to Hawaii, and $2 Million owed to OSU it would be an even more stretch for him coming to work for peanuts
Gary Andersen will make $2.65 million in 2017-18. Additionally, Andersen's buyout in 2021-22 will be $2.5 million if he leaves OSU for a Pac-12 or NFL job and $2 million if he leaves under any other circumstance.

Actually nobody owes anybody in that situation
After signing an extension in January, Anderson had a $12.6 million guaranteed contract through 2021, but per the university’s release, the mutual parting means that both sides have released each other “from all future contract obligations and payments.”

You know what's ironic, former UH DC Kevin Clune left Hawaii to join Anderson at Utah St to be the DC. They then again teamed up Oregon St where Clune again was the DC. What if Anderson balks but recommends his buddy Clune (who will probably be out of a job when a new OSU coach is named)

No thanks.
