Ha! Thanks BigWave, I believe you just refreshed my memory for something else.
I believe Tony Pangkee (or was it Pang-Kee?) was the guy who made the hit in that Air Force game that I mentioned in the 10 best plays thread.

The Hit
MisterPurple,
I don't know who made the hit, but I think the last name of the guy who scooped the fumble for the touchdown was "Lam" or "Lamm"... I'm thinking like "Robert Lamm" but darn I could be wrong...
But that has to go down in history as one of the "Nuttiest" plays...
Tony Pangkee (a Castle HS grad) laid some pretty mean hits

Nate Jackson of Waianae was the man. Big hits, big plays, in big games.
I noticed that the "all-time" list doesn't include Falaniko Noga. In my opinion, he'd not only be on the list, but to me he was better than his brother Al, and probably the best defensive player to play for UH ever. Again, just my opinion.

Robert Lan
Robert Lan was the DB who caught a fumble and ran it back 91 yards for the game winning TD against Air Force in 1988.
During those days there times when UH would gamble and call a suicide blitz bringing every LB and DB on a run blitz. This blitz was called only on the goal line plays in a do or die situation as receivers would be left wide open. Sometimes it was successful against a run but a TD was automatic if a pass was called and the QB could get the pass off.
Air Force was leading 14 to 12 with only a minute or two left to play. They had driven the ball the length of the field with their option attack and were around the UH 10 yard line. The suicide blitz was called and Joaquin Barnett, a 6-3, 245 middle linebacker destroyed the FB on the handoff. The ball popped up and Robert Lan who was blitzing in from the side caught it and ran 91 yards for a TD. UH won the game 19 to 12.

Pat Schmidt
Pat Schmidt is the first big-time hitting safety that I remember. He transferred in 1977 from UCLA with several others to be with Dick Tomey during his first year at UH. He was pretty big, probably about 6-2 and 210 lbs. Since Schmidt had played for Tomey at UCLA, he understood what Tomey wanted and was somewhat of a coach on the field. In Tomey's early years, the free safety played very deep to prevent big running or passing plays. Schmidt had pretty good closing speed and made a number of huge hits in the secondary. Once we saw how he played, we used to look for him on pass plays hoping for another crushing hit.

much mahalo
uhwarriors, much mahalo for the history of that play...
I remember is clearly but couldn't remember the names...
I'm the kind of guy who loses sleep when trying to remember names associated with certain events..
That play has to go down in UH history as one of the "Nuttiest"
