HONOLULU - University of Hawai`i football coach June Jones announced the 2004 team awards Sunday night at the annual awards banquet, sponsored by Na Koa, at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. Defensive end Timmy Chang (6-1, 196, Sr., Waipahu, Oahu) took home the Alec Waterhouse Most Valuable Player Award, defensive tackle Lui Fuga (6-1, 294, Sr., Waipahu, Oahu) received the Ben Yee Most Inspirational Award, while cornerback Kenny Patton (6-0, 187, So., Altadena, CA) garnered the Scholar-Athlete Award.

Chang, who became the NCAA career passing leader on Nov. 6, 2004, compiled 3,853 yards and 34 touchdowns on 327-of-556 passing in 12 games this season. The Waipahu, Oahu, native, is the only player in college football history to eclipse the 16,000-yard mark in both passing (16,667) and total offense (16,508). He earned WAC Player of the Week honors (Nov. 8 ) and has passed for 1,187 yards and 14 touchdowns in his last three games.

Fuga, one of the only players on the squad to be a part of four bowl games, played through injury and never missed a practice or game while finishing the regular season with 34 tackles, 7.5 tackles-for-loss (-16), two sacks (-11), a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and three quarterback hurries.

It was a great night with over 900 people in attendance including players, coaches, administrators, player's families, fans and Na Koa members. Many of the fans and their children were getting their autographs before the dinner. Timmy was at his best speaking about how much he has grown and his love and appreciation for his teammates, coaches and family.

Gerry Coffee, a retired Air Force pilot who was shot down over Vietnam and spent 7 years in the POW camp known as the "Hanoi Hilton" was the guest speaker. He spoke about how surviving that ordeal with other prisoners depended on belief in oneself, team unity, a purpose in life and belief in their County. He compared his ordeal to that of the team and coaches this season, how they stayed unified and persisted and their ultimate successes in the end. It was a very powerful moving speech.
